oil pressure guage???

What is the purpose of knowing the pressure of your oil. What is the point? I'm really curious. If you knew the pressure, could you change anything in order to improve performance? Why do they sell those guages? Does anyone know the point of them?

im not real sure, i would guess that if the pressure begins going down somethig is wrong, giving you time to shut down before some serious damage?????? (redp5)

yes....so you KNOW the presure of your oil system.....can you ADJUST anything? no.....but if your presure is LOW it will tell you that something is not right.....

your IDIOT light...and that is all it is....should NOT say LOW PRESURE.....

when ANY of your IDIOT lights they SHOULD have under them....TOO LATE...YOUR SCREWED.....

at least if you could see the presure decline over time it would give you an indication that there may be a problem....as where with only an idiot light...you don't know anthing is wrong till its TOO LATE....and your screwed.

after going through a motor on my miata, i wish i wish i wish i had an actualy oilpressure guage instead of an idiot guage/light.

MY Miata HAS a real gauge ;)

Observing the oil pressure will also tell you when the engine is warmed up enough to "romp on" and when it's still to cold to "abuse."

Just this one fact should get you a few more thousand miles of engine life.

i asked this in the mazdaspeed forum but i'll give it a shot here too.....

What gauges would you reccomend I get and in what order of importance/usefullness for my MSP? First is gonna be boost, and i want a turbo timer too, but what other bells/whistles/gadgets should i pick up?

the only other gauage that you would NEED or really be usefull at all is the one we are discussing here....an OIL PRESURE gauge.

and gauges are not THAT expensive...get them all at the same time!

what other gauges are there and what purpose (however minor) do they serve? Oil Temp? Air/Fuel ratio? etc...

thx :)

Thanks, maybe I should get one since I like to drive fast all the time - probably not a good thing. Are they easy to install?

It depends on your driving...

Oil Temperature can be big indicator. Engine oil contributes a large amount to engine cooling and if you are doing any form of hard driving (i.e. racing), the oil temp. is signifigant. It also can alert you to potential oil break down conditions. Oil pressure can be wierd. My '92 Saturn SC2 would run full oil pressure until it was 2 1/2 quarts low and then drop off. An Oil Temperature gauge would have clued me in on the low condition. I think the Mobil1 probably saved the motor when it went that low.

Just to revive this thread a little. What kind of Oil Pressure guage are people installing; Electric or manual?

Thanks.

How about a fuel pressure gauge? wouldnt this also be good for a turbo'd engine?

Air/Fuel ratio is a must on turbo's, why? It indicates if the car is running rich or lean. Also the exhaust temp gauge is good for turbo, since turbo's run trough the exhaust, u need that one if its too hot its not going to perform the same. Overall the best gauges for turbo is: A/F ratio, Oil press.,Exhaust temp.,boost, also turbo timer. If i'm missing any other please correct.
