I have a manual and also live in Toronto. I notice a power surge when the engine is cold at about 2300 RPMs. I also have that rattling noise. It doesn't last very long though, and is normal for our cars. Don't let you car warm up. Just get in it, drive, and evrything will be normal in about 5 minutes. It says right in the manual that there is no need to idle your car after you start it.
