Hi,

My name is Jeremy. I'm having issues with my 03 Protege 5. It started out as a misfire on one cyl. can't remember exactly which one, but now it is throwing a random misfire code. I have replaced all the obvious parts, plugs, plug wires, and coil packs, but it's still misfiring horribly. Where do I go from here as far as checking/replacing parts. I want to get it running correctly before doing anything else to it. would like to do a complete rebuild and turbo it, but want to make sure the engine can actually be saved first. Any info would be appreciated.

I would clean the EGR and IAC first, then maybe check the TSBs to see if your car VIN is in the range of the 03 Proteges that had the VICS screws fall out and get sucked into the motor.

I'd go with hornsfan10609 advice on cleaning the EGR valve and IAC. While you are at you might as well tackle cleaning the throttle body once you take the air intake tube off to get to the EGR valve.

Replacing the EGR valve is good to do. I cleaned mine (as thoroughly as possible) and that lasted less than 11 months. The carbon build-up in there was pretty heavy. The second time around, there was chunks of metal from somewhere else that jammed up the EGR. But I broke a bolt when I took the EGR valve apart, from rust. I put it together with three bolts until my new one came in. It ran good with the junk cleared out but it replaced anyway because there was more carbon build up and some areas I could not reach with toothbrushes, pipe cleaners, screwdrivers.

Go Canadian or go home ??!!!

The US EGR is less of a PITA to slap on... It sounds kind of like an EGR stuck open, but 'misfiring horribly' isnt really enough to go on for me... its not clear if its just running rough, cel blinking, or idle fluctuating wildly or what...

yeah i have to agree with lowlevel here. we need more info. how is the idle? is it steady? if so at what rpm? if not what is the range its bouncing in? is it smooth or rough? did you buy copper plugs? if so did you gap them correctly? does it seem to lack power? or is it seem to go fine? does the rpm bounce at steady cruising speed?
