neon underdash install

All right, so i finally got a switch from mazda that goes along with the fog light switch in that switch bay with along side the steering wheel. I got up the courage today to start messing with my baby and still have no idea where im gonna get power - or even how exactly to take apart the dash enough to get to everything. I am very new at this so any advice would be greatly appreiceiated. I am going to put two tubs under each side under the dash and then two more under the front seats. I need help with everything and expeceally the power. I was just thinking i could get the power from somewhere in the fuse box.

im going to hook up the +12v to the headlight switch wire, with a regular switch in series with it. headlights go on, neons come on dont want neons on when headlights on? flip the other switch

How much did that switch cost you? I just drilled and reamed a spot in the hollow one for my switch and gave the finger to the dealership for how much they wanted for the switch.

Alright first thing you'll want to do is take out the old filler spot where you are going to put the switch. The side panel that is covered by your door can be pulled off using a butter knife. Just slip it under there and pry it off.

Running wires can get very very complicated. You can run a wire straight from your battery, and install an inline fuse there. I tapped power from my amp cable. I've also heard of people tapping power from there fuse box by simply taking out a fuse that is on when you turn the car on, and pushing the end of the wire in there along with the fuse. That way its fused and you get power.

Once you get power you'll want to run that wire through the empty switch spot you just made, and hook it to the power terminal on your switch.

Running a ground wire to the switch is easy. there's a whole grounding cluster right by your fuse box, easily identified by the black wires running to it, and its held on by a 10mm bolt. take off the bolt, and pop open the case and snap the wire along the metal. then re-attach the bolt. Now run that wire to the negative terminal on your switch. (through the opening again)

Now you can mount the neons wherever, cut the cigarette adapters off, run the power wires from the neons, to the accessory terminal of the switch, and the negative wire to the negative terminal of the switch, or the same place you grounded the other wire.

Hide the wires, and turn on the car, and hit the switch

Thats cool as long as you feel better. At least for me neons all over the place and along with a big ass exaust on a civic - that is rice. Not a little nice blue glow to add some contrast to the guages.

I got them all the way in today - and it looks great - ill get picks up ass soon as i can.

As far as the switch goes - it is super clean. Mazda wants to charge you along the lines of about 50 bucks, but if you are like me and hate paying full price for anything, then you would want to make friends with someone that works in mazda parts or as an installer - maybe smoke a cig or two with them and talk about life, and then you could have them write it off as "well, its seems like this fog light switch is broken, i guess ill just have to get you a new one". Once you have done this, you get an identical looking fog light switch that looks so clean and nice, and even lights up at night.

As far as the acutally switch it self goes - it is confusing as crap. I piggy back off the real fog light switch for the illumination of the acutual switch which is done with two of the four wires on you fog light switch. After that i spent about 4 hours trien to figure out how i could piggy back off the other ones to actaully get power and get the switch to work the way i wanted it two. But at about 4 hours and 30 min i relized that was impossible because there is some messed up relay patterns that acutally turn your fog lights on and when you push in the fog lights switch all you are doing is completing the relay circuit cause it to turn on. NO POWER THERE. At this point i turned to my great friend the steering column, where i tapped into the ignition wire aswell as a constant coming from the winshield wipers - I was in business.

All in all - i hooked up 2 six inch mines under the dash - 2 15 inch under the front of the seats and 2 - 4 inch under the back for a nice and tasteful blue glow throughout the cabin.

Let me know if anyone needs help, after spending about 10 hours on this today i learned pretty much every way that you could install these things.

hey lay off neons can be cool as long as you can't see the tube in my old car i had white ones under the seats and dash tied into the door trigger. neons done right = nice subtle mod

I simply ran the wiring for the two blue ones under my dash to my map light. Works like a charm and took about 2minutes to do.
