NEED HELP: Friends MSP down.... read me

Ok heres low down.... friend and I got msp's same time done relatively same mods..... his car has 19k on it mods: Intake, MBC @ 8.5 spikes @ 9psi, hose kit, colder plugs, spark plug wires.

Story: about 45 mins ago we were getting fast food.... while waiting at the window for our food his exhaust started sounding a little more "close" ie sounded like it was underneath us a little and not coming from the rear. As we pulled away it sounded a little leaner than normal..... as we pulled out to get back on the main road it lost power (ie hitting gas going no where.... electrical was still on). Turned car off and went to turn it on again and it just made a loud rumble (did not turn over).

Things to take into account in helping us diagnose this.

1) There was no loud clanking nor is there any loud clanking when we try to start it

2) There is no fluid loss underneath the car, no funny smells, nothing smoking.

3) Its about 15 degrees here right now and was driven about 10 miles today before this happened with no problems.

Any ideas on what it could be? Hes shitting a brick right now wondering what it is. Any chance its something simple? Spark Plugs? Hose come loose? If not any ideas? Anything we should try out to help diagnose it?

I would check your intake connections. If not those look for any kind of vacuum lines that might have come lose or snapped.

does the starter turn when you turn the key?
look around under there and make sure everything is connected and looks like it's supposed to, intake, exhaust, spark plugs, plug wires, sensors, fluid levels, etc...

ok... just trying to rule out he has a blown engine.... hes freaking out pretty bad but from the blown engines ive seen and others ive heard about we'd have a lot more metal and fluids on the ground.

Thanks for the help... keep it coming we're gonna go up there in 30 mins with a flashlight and longjohns and start workin a little

Is there gas in it?

Good thinking. Funny how we always forget to check the obvious things in the begining. lol.

Anyhow, definitely doesn't sound like a blown engine. So your friend can calm down. Given the temp it really sounds like a pipe or hose has either come off or possibly cracked.

yes it has gas (smartass lol)

gonna go check hoses and what not..... what would explain the loud wow-wow-wow when we try to start it ? (you can fell the loud wow)

i would agree, engines tend to make a lot of noise when they blow up. but without hearing the noises it was making, i won't say it's definite

wow-wow-wow like an engine turning over and not firing? the starter will make it go wow-wow-wow, just don't do that too much or you'll drain the battery

UPDATE:

Went back to where its currently residing..... started looking for loose hoses, cracked, or plain popped off.... nada.

Went and looked underneath for symptoms of something worse (ie fluids leaking or symptoms of blown engine) and saw what I THINK is the problem

From the turbo there is one pipe that goes to the intake and one pipe that goes underneath the car and is visible from underneath the car. Oddly enough right about where the front seat doors end (moving backwards) and in the center of the car there is a connection point where they arent connected (this would explain the noise we noticed while idling).

Now my questions.... would this cause complete lack of power and inability to start the car? Is this a possible cause or just a symptom of something bigger?

I'm gonna look for a picture of the underside of our car so i can show the point and be more descriptive.

That would be the downpipe...and if it is not connected to the cats then I'm thinking the O2 sensors are not reading what they want, are you getting a CEL???

I don't know if that is the problem, but I am assuming that if the O2 sensors are not reading anything going through the exhaust as the car is running it would cause problems.

Try to get that hooked up and it SHOULD start and run fine; but don't quote me on that:D

what in gods name would cause the downpipe to come off?

Anywho check engine light does come on.

More info: a few days back he got backed into (just a tiny cracked piece of plastic on the bumper but right in front of the turbo) could this have caused the downpipe to get knocked around enough to come off?

Yikes I would hope not. Is he running an aftermarket DP, I can't remember if you said he was or not. Those things should not just be falling off. But, crazier things have happened. Can't hurt to check anyhow.

Yeah, I don't know how it fell off, but that is the only pipe down there that you could be talking about.

Maybe when he got rearended it put some for on the whole exhaust system by hitting the muffler, but I still don't know how those bolts would get worked loose.

hes running a stock DP

its not touching the ground or anything

work with my graphic here but the connection point is not a bolt on point but the pipes were visibly not connected

Its offset something like this.... just looks like it needs to be slid back into place

pipe 1 pipe 2
