looking into getting a WRX...An old one (2002-2004) with about 40k miles. I have read good things about reliability and such but I wanted to ask peoples that may know...?
Also I need to get an Auto (i know, start the flaming)- so the wife can drive it if needed...Is there anything to know about Subaru auto's? Do they make a sport shift?

thanks!

Im sure they dont make a sports shift in the later models your looking at. So it looks like you will be getting an auto. I would go for it. They are reliable and awd.

You might as well just get a focus or something. Auto WRXs have absolutely no balls. Test drive a manual and then an auto to see what I'm talking about. My friend has one and I can destry his car (I just have a stock msp) with ease.

Just teach her how to drive stick. It's so easy.... My wife didn't think she'd be able to learn either but I had her driving smoothly in about a half hour.

LOL...Point understood, but I value my life and the multiple cluthes too much, I may put up with the auto....

thanks though
My main question was just in terms of reliability...

thanks!

can't ask for a more reliable awd car. but then again you probably already knew that.

what you didn't know is (at least consciously) is that the REAL reason you created this thread was to be convinced that you should get a stick instead. How do I know this? The "I know, start the flaming" line says it all. The reason auto WRX sales account for a mere 12% of all wrx sales (and most of those are the wagon variety) is because most of the people who are interested in a sweet car like that aren't interested in a neutered version. Sort of defeats the purpose of having the car.

Granted, there are plenty of fast automatic cars out there. Many of them only come in auto! (I'm thinking about the various dodge muscle cars out there) Not only are those cars nowhere near as fun to drive as the WRX (since their handling sucks) but, because they're not turbo, the fact that they're auto doesn't have nearly the same type of effect on the overall performance.

Look man... I know I sound like I'm being a dick. and.. you know, I probably am. But, at the same time, I was literally in your shoes 3 years ago. well... ok, not literally! but you get the point. A friend of mine basically said the same crap I'm saying to you and I've owed him ever since. Teaching the wife stick was a piece of cake. I had to rent a truck from home depot one weekend so, when they told me the only truck they had left was a stick, I jumped at the opportunity. She learned it quicker than I thought...

Her knowing how to drive it is truly a win/win. i don't have have to worry about getting too drunk at a wedding and my car is fun to drive. As I said, a friend of mine has an auto wrx so I'm very familar with those cars. The turbo on the wrx spools up a lot slower than the msp so having the auto absolutely kills the fun. his car is barely ever in the power band and there isnt' a day that goes by in which he's not complaining about it.

All I'm saying is... think twice. either way... you'll have an awd car that's as reliable as they come. good luck.

LOL .... You my friend are a "Froid" of the car world. Point taken, and you are winning me over....But I have to find one I like first...
Bright side is we just got an '07 mazda6 so Im still in the mazda family....

THANKS MUCH!

huge resource for WRX's. I had an 02. I blew the tranny on it within 20K. The 02-03' 5 speeds were the weak link. IIRC, the 04+ have a diff/better tranny. A STI 6speed is nearly indestrucible.

I have a friend, the in house tuner at www.pandlmotorsports.com here in IL that has a 12 second auto 02 WRX Wagon (his personal site http://www.projectwrx.com/) that's with a full interior, a trunk load of stuff and a 350+ lb man driving it. I'm sure if it was a 150lb guy in a gutted car it would be in the low 11's.

Personally, unless I knew the original owner of a WRX and knew how they drove, I would not buy a used 02-03 WRX 5 speed. I would not buy a used WRX that I didn't know the history of either. I've heard alot of stories from other shops of putting modded WRX's to stock or sub-stock (I just heard about a WRX that had Legacy front brakes swapped into it and a GC RS rear sway bar) traded in to a dealer recently.

If I had a bit more $ in my recent "new daily driver" budget, I would have looked long and hard for a 03 Sonic Yellow Auto Wagon for a daily driver instead of the MP3, not that I'm complaining about the MP3.

haha So I guess my psych degree wasn't a waste afterall.

Seriously though... you're gonna love the car. As much as I love my msp, if it wasn't for the color (mine's orange) I'd totally regret not getting a wrx instead.

I second what blue-sun said about knowing the history of the car. Ideally, if I were in the market, I'd try to find one that was never touched (no mods) Which... isn't easy but I'm sure they're out there. Since a lot more "older" people buy these cars than people realize, you might get lucky and find one on the block that wasn't beaten to death.

If all else fails.... you could always go new. yeah, it's a lot more money but the finance rate will be a lot less and wrxs, despite their popularity, sell for invoice (or less!) so they're easily one of the best deals around. good luck

BTW... nice car blue. Very classy look.

I love my 06 wrx man, but def go with manual you will def regret it in the long run. However all the years seem to have some issues with tranny's, the 04+ has some differences to the tranny as well as the 06's which are different from the 04's+....The main thing about the 06's are the 2.5l motors which are the same as teh STi motor except for the different head/turbo/ecu etc etc but for the most part its the same..........id look into an 06 if y ou can afford.....however I do love em all!

I gotta say, when the WRX went through its latest redesign, I absolutely HATED the front end. But now, it's really, REALLY grown on me. The headlights wrapping around to the sides especially make it look more aggressive.

Yeah but then they do a model re-vamp and come up with some other ugly design that eventually "grows" on people. I've heard by 2008 they're gonna re-design it again, by the time people start adjusting to the bag over the head looks they go and change it.

Bottom line: The design team at Subaru = Michael Jackson's plastic surgeons.

A WRX in an automatic transmission...........and the legacy..........both feel like you're driving an N/A vehicle.

It's weird..........but depressing.

Anything Subaru depreciates like a mug. Good now when you wanna buy, bad later when you wanna sell.

Actually they seem to hold their value fairly well IMO.
