My MSP v.s. my SRT-4 in the twisties

Well, I took my new SRT-4 to my favorite twisty country back roads here in the Raleigh, NC area today and have some impressions on how it compares to our Spicy MSP which I've taken on this run a few times.

The SRT just has a surprising amount of speed......the throttle response is really linear and smooth when powering out of corners......it really bests the MSP here because of the "hesitation". Even if Mazda fixes the hesitation (let's pray) the SRT torque coming out of corners still rocks.

As I said in an earlier post, the SRT brakes feel incredible. Through the twisty bits they just scrub off speed like it's nothing and the pedal feel never changes....nice and solid the whole time. At this early stage I can't really tell which is best because the MSP brakes feel just as good.

The steering feedback and handling still goes to the MSP through the twisties hands down. I could throw the SRT through the corners at a pretty good clip and it stuck without any problems but compared to the MSP it feels a bit vague when pushing through corners. The MSP simply feels like it's on rails and the steering input is just EXACT! You go exactly where you steer and the feel is flawless. The SRT didn't have any problems keeping a nice, fast line through curves but the vagueness kinda gives the feeling that it may drift offline.....although to it's credit it never did.

All in all, I'd feel comfortable pushing the MSP harder and quicker through corners but the SRT throttle response coming out of the corners along with that torque and straightline speed would probably more than make up for any gap in cornerspeed. Also, the SRT seats are better for cornering because the big bolsters that hold you in tight.....in the MSP I find myself having to grip the wheel for dear life when cornering hard because of the "commuter" seats.

Good to see a member on here who will trully have an unbiased opinion. And from the sounds of it, your verdict on both seems right on from what we know about these cars.

cool dude, must be hella fun though. one q, which one is gonna be your "project car" or is it gonna be both?

Hey, where're these roads in Raleigh? I'm going to be driving down to visit my parents in a couple weeks and I'd like to take my dad for a spin on some good twisties while down there. By the way, they're way out Creedmor in N. Raleigh.

I'm probably gonna leave both stock......the wife mainly drives the MSP and she's quite happy with it the way it is. If I do anything to the SRT it'll probably a Stage 1 or Stage 2 kit from Mopar which keeps all the warranties intact.......I don't wanna mess with reliability too much so I'll leave well enough alone. I'm all about turning a wrench on motorcycles but cars are a bit much for me unless it's an old CRX or something :)

That's ok QwikSRT4, you have plenty of time to get a better car. :D

Nice post. Excellent review. Very interesting observations. I'm thinking if they didn't make the SRT-4 a 4x4 it would have handled better.

loj68 - So seriously which car do you really enjoy being in and driving ?

I really enjoyed your comparison...very much what I observed from my test drive. One thing I couldn't deal with was the shifter...I felt like I was driving a truck with that thing.

That's the best comparo of the two I have read including all those worthless mags I pay for.
It's like elegance -vs- brutality. One is for the ballet and the other for the mosh pit.
Of coure at 12PSI with a 3'' exhaust and a FMIC I can make my MSP more Heavy Metal and less Philharmonic.

well, at this early juncture it's still the MSP.......straight line speed is not the biggest factor for me in a car.......the MSP is more friendly as a daily driver and handles much better.....and looks much better IMHO.......as I've said before my 1st choice would be an MSP but since we already have one I went with my 2nd choice :)

The SRT-4 is front wheel drive.

HEy ass hole maybe not everyone knew that!!!

(rofl)

Sarcasim is cool (thumb)

Yea but we all know the MSP looks better........My previous car was an Audi A4 1.8 Turbo Quattro (slightly tuned of course)....I miss the power and handling on that car compared to my MP5........ I'm impressed though, for an american made turbo compact car it is a good performer car especialy for the price.....its still a neon though...nothing against it or nothing personal just never cared for american car styling.........just my 2 cents...

Wow he got me then. I thought HE thought I thought the SRT-4 was really 4x4. Wait what the **** did I just type?
