MSP Oil Filter NOT standard size!

Did my first oil change at 1350 miles and there's some things you might want to know about the oil filter.

Mazda supplies an oil filter made by Tenex in the USA, but the crimped portion of the case has been made just large enough so that the 65mm 14 facet oil filter wrench won't fit! I used my band type wrench to get it off, but it was a bear since it's under the intake manifold. Tightening the filter with the band wrench was difficult, so I couldn't quite get the Mazda spec 1 and 1/6 turns after gasket contact done.:mad::mad:

Purolator lists their L14612 standard filter as a replacement in their 2003 book, but it is maybe 3 to 4mm smaller in diameter at the o ring. However, a standard 65mm 14 facet wrench fits the case. Same for the Mobil1 M1-108 filter. Purolator will soon offer their Pure One oil filter PL14612, but it isn't in production yet.

Ok, so all you do it yourself oil changers out there now know what I know: Mazda deliberately changed the oil filter case to get you to come to the dealer for oil filter changes. That is pure :bs: :bs: :bs:

Next change I put on the aftermarket filters and use the new wrench!:p

um, i have a Pure one PL14612, it was at pepboys, i await it for my next oil change :)

And yeah, the mazda one is different, my wrench didnt fit either. Weirdos.

Yeah, hand tighten ALWAYS, right linux?

AFIAK, Mazda puts on a beefier oil filter from the factory, probably so that morons that don't change their oil will have more time before there engine dies.

always hand tighten only 1/4 turn more after it's snug, that way you can take it off with bare hands when it's time for change

down with filter wrenches :P

ACTUALLY Mazda is in cahoots with the tool makers....NOW they get to make a new size oil filter socket and you get to buy one....lol or at least the people that like using OEM filters will buy one.....they might be appearing at walmart soon....just depends on if there are any other filters out there that same size.....you may find that there already is a filter socket out there that fits..

Part no. B6Y2 14 302 sucks

Let's hope they have a socket out there somewhere that fits our OEM oil filter. I just did my first oil change yesterday and today I feel a little bit like going over to Mazda and throwing my old oil filter at them.

Had to poke holes to twist the sucker off since my nearby Advanced Auto Parts store did not carry the proper size wrench for our itty-bitty-teeny-weeny sized one-of-a-kind oil filter. (chair)

None of the universal filter straps they carried, nor chain-type wrenches would fit the small filter. In fact they had only one item that was TOO small for the filter, a 65mm socket filter wrench.... and I had asked Mazda (as I bought the filter from them) if I needed a special tool, as instructed in the manual, to replace the oil filter.... they said no, that I most likely could do it by hand. :bs:

uh, was this your very first oil change ever on your MP3? Because once you've made that first change, and subsequent filters are hand installed, you can definitely remove the filter by hand (I've done it twice already)

hee hee, first oil change on my MP3 by ME. I had my first few oil changes done at Mazda... while they fixed my alignments, fixed my bushings, fixed my stereo, etc... always something.... so I figure to get my oil changed with them... maybe that way they'll actually fix a problem I have under warranty properly.

ah i see

there really is no reason to get a custom filter wrench, when I overtightened the filter the 1st time i changed the oil and had a hard time loosening it for the 2nd change, i used one of those adjustable pipe wrenchs and just went at it and it came off.

now i NEVER overtighten the filter. Once the filter starts to feel snug, turn it another 1/4 turn, and call it a day :)

The MSP's I hear utilize an oil cooler that goes on before the oil filter. It has a bigger neck for the oil filter to screw into than the standard one.

I've been using the Purolator 14622 on my ES and it fits just fine. That is strange that the MSP would use a different filter, seeing how the engine blocks are supposedly identical. Never heard of the 14612

My V6 MX-3 GS had the same thing.

Ok...I just went to www.pureoil.com

It looks like the 14612 is going to replace the 14622. Because on the ES it says that you can use both filters, however the 14622 is limited to the existing stock on hand. I guess with all the imports cruising around MD our local auto shops have stocked up on the 14622's. But rest assured, if you can find a 14622 it should fit your MSP just fine. The small difference in size of the O Ring should not make a difference, because the metal contact plate is fairly large. If you are worried, just dry fit the filter before you tighten it completely.

Yeah...my gf's MX-3 GS V6 took a Purolator 14620. And that filter was simple to access compared to the protege.

It doesn't have to be complicated.......

Buy a MAZDA oil filter (or whatever brand you choose), buy 4 qts. of oil, and take it to a trustworthy shop, and have them do it. They charge me $12.00 labor. It's worth it!!!

Sorry, Greg, but it can be that complicated! It shouldn't, but it can be. The local Jiffy Lube refused to use my oil or oil filter when I came in for an oil change (on a previous car). No Sir, we MUST use our cheap a$$ brand oil and filter.

I didn't understand why, but I'd be stupid if I PAY them to put in cheap dino oil and a cheap filter, when I'm willing to supply them synthetic and a good filter at no charge!

So I do my own oil & filter changes now. Not such a big deal now that curbside recycling picks up the used oil. :)

Yeah that sucks! I'm lucky to have an independent mom & pop shop right down the street. I entrust them to both of my Mazdas for oil changes, and tire rotation/balance. I bring them the oil/filter, and they make me Grin!!

Long ago, when I owned a 1986 Escort GT - that is when I quit trying to change the oil in my cars. My 1993 Civic was easy, but the GT was not. The damn filter was up behind the engine, between the engine and the firewall. No way to easily get to it without it being on a lift. Then; I bought my 1999 Sentra SE Limited. The oil filter was right there on top of the engine in the back, but because of the skirting, it was a pain to get under the car, so I take my cars in to have oil changed now.
