Did my first oil change at 1350 miles and there's some things you might want to know about the oil filter.
Mazda supplies an oil filter made by Tenex in the USA, but the crimped portion of the case has been made just large enough so that the 65mm 14 facet oil filter wrench won't fit! I used my band type wrench to get it off, but it was a bear since it's under the intake manifold. Tightening the filter with the band wrench was difficult, so I couldn't quite get the Mazda spec 1 and 1/6 turns after gasket contact done.:mad::mad:
Purolator lists their L14612 standard filter as a replacement in their 2003 book, but it is maybe 3 to 4mm smaller in diameter at the o ring. However, a standard 65mm 14 facet wrench fits the case. Same for the Mobil1 M1-108 filter. Purolator will soon offer their Pure One oil filter PL14612, but it isn't in production yet.
Ok, so all you do it yourself oil changers out there now know what I know: Mazda deliberately changed the oil filter case to get you to come to the dealer for oil filter changes. That is pure :bs: :bs: :bs:
Next change I put on the aftermarket filters and use the new wrench!
