Great handling stock silver P5.... $16,500

Tein S-Tech springs plus install .... $600

Able to keep up with a Miata on twisty hill roads ... Pretty damn nice

Using this experience to smoke a riced out RSX Type-S on the same road.... now THAT'S PRICELESS!!!

Got SUSHI? :D

hehe my dad bought a 02 Miata week before I got my P5. He got little pissed (joking) that my 4 door could keep up on some corners. :)

Course I like his Miata better than the P5....hmm maybe a trade is in order.

Nah I like having 4 doors and cargo space.

Whoa. My wife's Miata will smoke my P5 everytime.
More power, less weight, and RWD.

I have a Protege MP3 and a 99 10th Anniversary Edition Miata. I have autocrossed both on the same course and despite have used the miata to learn the course, it was faster than the MP3 when they were both on competition tires.

The MP3 is great for an inexpensive, small sedan but it is not the equal of a miata. Of course this is just my opinion based on a sample of one. SCCA must think the same since in SOLO II the MP3 is in a slower class.

oh if we get into long sweepers or a quick series of turns, he smokes me. If on a small sweeper I can normally keep up, but course I'm at the limit and he isn't.
Great little cars.

I think something was either seriously wrong with the Miata, or the driver wasn't as in to this "experience" as you were.

My "other car" is a 1994 Miata R package, and my fairly stock silver P5 is no match for it's handling . . . . expecially in the twisties - Or it's accelleration, for that matter.

I dunno, you might be right, but I was driving hard too, there were 8 turns in total on that short mountain road, he pulled away a little on 4 of them, 3 others I was able to keep up but I didn't gain much and there is 1 big tight turn where he tried to drift it through without much success (I saw he locked his rear wheels), and that particular turn I was able to close up the distance.

One thing though I did upgraded my suspension and did a 2" drop on my P5, that helped a little in keeping up with him. I agree with you on it's acceleration part. But whatever happened was a pretty nice experience for both me and the Miata...

The Pro5s handle VERY well. You can't beat em with any other econo-car IMO. If you know how to handle them right, they can rival a miata, but then I have only matched the Pro5 against our previous 01 miata. I have found that the 01+ miatas don't handle near as well as my other 99 and especially my 99 10AE.
I have yet to put the Pro5 against my 10AE. :D

At any rate, you guys are wise to have an all Mazda lineup in your driveways. :)

Motor on...

hands down on that one, both P5 and the Miata are great, I'm just happy to be able to experience a Miata being driven the way it's meant to be.
