Thanks. Ever gonna get that P5 back together, or are you just gonna keep everyone waiting? ;)

Well now that premium gas is over $3 a gallon and it was over 90*F on Monday, I think it is about time for my gas-guzzling non-AC having P5 to be running... :D

Do some dynos with different plates... I wanna see the difference between various combos. Sounds cool.

Good idea. What ever happened to that dyno day we were going to do on a Thursday?

Someone's already done them, and also done dyno runs with the stock cat back, and a twin tip borla for comparisson. Supertrapp wins. Also lighter than everything else. I'll try to get the link later on, I can't find it at the moment.

I'm up for another thursday night dyno... now that the turbo is in. :D

I'm down for some skeeter foggin'...err, dyno pulls. I'm dying to have a baseline run.

Mission: Install Intake

So the goal is to take the stock intake:

And make it look more like this:

The intake is a Racing Beat knockoff, using Racing Beat bracketry. RB decided they didn't want to send any hardware or instructions w/ the brackets, so I went to home depot and picked up a couple of steel bolts / lock nuts / washers and winged it. I had to do the bracket twice, because the lower bracket has a longer and shorter 'side', and if you have it flipped with the shorter side towards the rear of the car, it ain't going to fit. Yay no instructions! So step 1, remove stock plastic intake. You get something more or less like this:

Next, bolt the bracket in to 2 OEM holes in the unibody. The bolts were plenty long to use the stock bolts. Note the bracket in it's wrong configuration:

Bolt everything together, and you end up with something that looks more or less like this:

End result: Sits right behind the headlight for extra cool air, it actually registered on the but dyno, the whole system's louder now, and the exhaust crackles and pops a good but more, which is fun :D

mad weight reduction + air cooling FTW.

duh.

I've got no idea what that is but a noise maker. That's what rattles. And rattles. And rattles...

Crossroads

Sooooo I'm at a crossroads. There's (almost) a new tire on the block in STS/2. The Bridgestone RE-01R, from all credible sources, is the absolute shizzit. However, the 15" tires won't be in stock until early June at the soonest, and I need tires by like...last week. My car is still in the development phase for the time being, so I'm thinking that the well tested, well proven, cheaper, more available RT-615 may be a better choice for the season.

What's the general consensus from the ST crowd?

Bridgestone makes good tires, but +5 for Azenis being much cheaper. Pretty sure the way you drive, it doesn't matter. Hell, the way you drive, I've got some Ziex 512's I could sell you in a week or two...

What is the problem with the current tires? No tread or heat cycled out?

The RE-01R is going to be the new tire in STS/2 this year it looks like. But it needs to be shaved to run those kind of times (look at the recent GRM full tread test VS the testing done by miata guys shaved)

If you plan on driving around on the tires all the time and putting the miles on them you might want to stick with Azenis since the bridgestones seem to need to be shaved to be faster while the Azenis do not give up nearly as much by running full tread.

Of course if you want to delay your decision until the RE-01R's are out I have some old RT-215's that I could sell that I think still have some tread on them.

Both.

I still vote for the Z212. They operate at a much higher slip angle, and will release alot more gradually. For where you are as a driver I think learning how to carry the momentum will benefit you.

The 615 are a great tire, don't get me wrong, but are much less forgiving. Plus, the Kooks will be superior in the wet. And if you set up the car to drive on the Kooks you won't have to change much when you go to the RE01Rs. They both need alot more camber, and similar driving techniques (from what I understand).

I agree with wayne try the kooks out. Plus you can take that extra cash and throw it into entrance fees and more mods for the miata to make it even more competitive. Plus as wayne was saying the kooks are more forgiving which i think your co driver will enjoy a little better.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to talk to Luke tonght and see where to go, since he'll be paying for at least part of them ;). I think the kooks would be a good alternative. Edge racing is out of stock in the 225/45-15s tho, so it'll probably just have to be the 205/50s in that size. God I hope those aren't taller than the Azenis...

Mox: I know it'll be the tire to have, but my car's not nearly up to that level yet. Plus, to my knowledge, everyone else is on the azenis in my class for now. I know the pro folks want to go to the Bstones, but they're much better prepped (at least as far as the driver is concerned lol)
