Installing speakers

I have a 2003 Mazda Astina (that's what they call a Protege 5 in Australia).

Judging by the pics on the US site, the doors look essentially the same as on the Oz model.

I'm looking at installing 6" or 6.5" splits in the front and 6"x9" 3-ways in the back (either in the doors or on a custom parcel shelf).

Typical depth dimensions for the sorts of speakers I am considering are:

84mm, ie 3.31" for the 6.5s; and
101mm, ie 3.98" for the 6x9s.

I note from other posts on this forum that the standard mounting depths are only 2.75" (at best) in the front and 4.25" in the back.

Using spacers, what is the max depth of a speaker that will fit in the front, without busting through the grille?

(The figures I used above are for Pioneer speakers - cannot tell from the Aust. Pioneer site whether the depths quoted include the grilles or not. What is standard practice?)

well its OBVIOUS that in the front you will need spacers...but the figure you have for door depth in the front is just a little off....its more like 2 5/8 inches at best....but with that said....you have about one inch above the stock speaker to the grill....there is a ring that you would need to trim on the grill on the INSIDE of the door panel that acts like a seal between the door panel and the speaker.....but that is easily trimmed...and seeing as how you would be going from 5 X 7 speakers to 6 1/2's...you don't need it anyway.....

SO.....could you make a spacer and make these fit without "busting through the grill" as you put it? YES....it will take a spacer of about .7" thick..... (17.78 mm)

OBVIOUSLY the 6 X 9's would fit in the rear doors from a depth perspective...but you will have to either make some adapters there too....or cut the door....one or the other.....

A speaker that deep will not fit in the front, witha spacer large enough it will hit the door. Cutting the rear doors to hell for a 6x9 in a major waste of time.
