I recently experienced an airbag light; flashing twice every few seconds. I was hesitant to drive to the dealer as wasn't sure if it was something I caused. So I purchased an inexpensive OBD-II reader that sends the data via Bluetooth device such as phone or laptop. I bought it from Amazon for about $23 (https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned)) and also purchased the full Torque software from Android Store for $4.95.
When I read for the error code, it gave me a code of B1994; I did a Google search and it came back telling me that there was high resistance on the driver's side airbag circuit. I looked underneath the driver's seat and my new dog (Sheltie) chewed up the wire. I re-spliced it and the error immediately went away.
Moral of the story is had I just took the car to the dealer thinking it was a warranty repair, I'd probably been billed for the diagnostics; or worse, been hit with items that were never faulty to begin with.
