How soon did you make the switch...

to synthetic oil? We're looking to put about 700 miles on the 5 next week and with just 1800 miles on the odo, I figure it's a good time for the first change. Question is; should I put in conventional for another 3-5K, or go ahead and make the switch to full synthetic? I hear a lot about how with new engine technology/manufacturing, you don't really have to break an engine in 'like in the old days' (whenever that was). And correct me if I'm wrong, the 5 didn't come with special 'break in' oil. So, I'm thinking of going full synthetic which is what I plan to run over the life of the car anyway. Anyone care to comment for or against?

If it were me, I would change the oil after your trip, ~3k on the odo, and make the switch to synthetic at that time.(drive2)

I'd stick with conventional, or semi, and switch to synthetic after a few thousand miles. I switched mine at about 1000 and it does burn a little bit.

I did my first change and switch after the first 1000 miles, and been using synthetic since.

I just past the first 100,000 last week on my way to Vegas ^_^

First change.

I switched mine at the first interval (4 months/8000 km), and I was just over 6000km at that time. I used Mobil 1 5w20 with a Mazda filter at that time, and every 4 months since. I am just over 30 000km now, and it does not use a drop between changes.
