how much was your 15k service or did you skip it?

Hey guys,

I have had my car for 8 months now and I am already at 17k miles. I haven't done the 15k mile service because by my reading of the owners manual it's not really required and isn't much more then a glorified oil change. Even the dealer says 15k miles or 1 year. So I am thinking I may pass on the 15k and continue with my 18 pt. oil changes at every 5k using mobil 1 5W30 and just go for the 30k tune-up. I have been changing my oil with mobil 1 5W30 since my first oil change at 2,500 miles. That should be about 14-15 months after I got the car. (as if I needed to say anything I passed on the 7,500 mile service too)

So first, how much do your dealers charge for the 15k service? Around here the best is about $200 (that's the "special" price)

nothing more than a waaay overpriced oil change.
only extra thing I saw that needed to be looked at
was the refrigerant levels. but if your ac is still cold
then its fine.

That's exactly the way I was feeling about it, an overpriced, glorified oil change. But I don't want to be accused of not taking care of the care when it comes to any warranty service. I save all the reciepts for my oil changes, etc...

Most of my cars have never seen the dealership after being taken home. I just do the usual oil changes and tune-ups myself. By the time the car reaches the need for a major scheduled maintenance, I'm usually going gaga over a newer model and looking at a trade in.

I just bypassed the 7500 mile tune up.. (my car with 8200 miles on it now) but since it is at the dealers today anyway getting a new windshield, I decided to get the oil change done since it was already there.. $26 for an oil change here..

Exactly, dealer tune-ups a rip off if your even a novice at mechanical work... Just do it yourself.

I think usually at 30,000 miles:
Change air filter (if you haven't switched to intake or KN already)
Flush/change coolant
New plugs
Check/replace PCV
Start thinking about transmission/clutch fluid change (my dealership said this should be changed at 36,000 miles)
anything else?

And regular service:
Rotate tires (I do it every 3,000 miles)
Change oil/filter
Lube and fluids

I plan to do a 15000 oil change and filter this weekend. I'll also check all fluids to be sure they are at the proper level.

When you say "lube", what areas should I be looking at?

lube - generally for moving metal parts like door,trunk,hood hinges. I didn't see any zerk fittings under the p5 but didn't look to hard though.

don't forget todo a visual check of the belts. front brakes tend to be a low at this point also if you're an aggressive driver. also if you get squishy brakes you may want to look at the brake fluid too.

I also forgot alignment. I have Firestone Lifetime Alignment whooppee! In the armpit / pothole / construction / tollbooth state (aka New Jersey), I NEED alignment every 6,000 miles.

yah, I have rotated my tires twice already, but 17,000 miles the tread is still looking good. I am hoping to get 30,000 miles out of the tiers, unless of course I start going to some autocross events, then I know I won't get anywhere close to that!


Thanks for the comments in general folks. This is pretty much what I felt the case was you all have confirmed how I felt about the 15k change, that is it's a way overpriced glorified oil change. It's a shame that we all have to feel like our dealerships do everything they possibly can to rip us off instead of really being there to serve the customer. My best experience with a Mazda dealer has been with Mazdastuff.com and unfortunately that's halfway across the country for me so I can't exactly show up for routine stuff.

i'm lookin at 37K miles and i'm heading in to "my mechanic" for the 30K service. mostly checking safety issues, probably do the plugs and replace the coolant and tranny fluid (yes i've got the auto) i actually called mazda service at around 15k and the guy asked me if i was having any problems, i said no, and he said skip the service it's not necessary if your checking your safety stuff periodically, which i do when i change the oil. joe

If you're religious about tire rotation do the cross pattern. If you're not too religious then maybe front-to-back only might be good. It's up to you. BTW the site above comes from Firestone/Bridgestone.
