okay..my engine's been making this ticking noise and i know its nothing with that intake .. it sounds like lifters.. i have around 12000 miles on my car and i don't know if i'm still covered by my warrantee.. what should i do? what is it? conditions when i hear it is when its warm and idling. when i rev it up the ticking increases. could it be lifters? or is that normal? thanks..

dude when was the last time you changed the oil ..also check the oil level and also make sure your oil drain plug is still on the car (if you have your oil changed at walmart) also have you ragged the s*** out of it or let anyone drive it that where you were not around .. the noise of ticking generally is from a low oil level and or a loose valve and many other things but what I listed above is and or can be a majoir part in it

also call me if you need to ... 865-556-9269 and i can get your # and call you for free .. I can call any where in the USA or Canda for free and I got unlimited Mins too so dont hesatate to hollar at me

noises

no one drives it other than me, im goiing to change my oil this saturday. i get free lifetime oilchanges at mazda dealer. i don't think my oil level is low because i checked it today. so its the valve? that's not gonna be good is it?

well when was the last time you change your oil .. how long ago and how many miles.... but I know my p5 sounds like s*** when it starts up from being really cold out although its garaged all night and you can here the valves ticking untill the oil re-solidifies and coats the engine again then it goes away and that takes about 10-15 seconds but if its a constant noise even when its warmed up you may have ran it low on oil at one point and it may have caused damage to it ..but lets not go for the worse at this point .... what you can do ..is fire it up and pop the hood ..let it warm up fully adn place your head/ear close the vavle cover and listen to see if you hear any one ticking louder then the other .. and if you cant tell just slowly increase the throttle from under the hood (slide the throttle body lever ..youll see a cable connectect to it ) and you should be abel to tell and if you can hear a differance then it is most likley damage to one or more valves or maybe just a fluke case of a valve that is out of adjustment

oil change

the oil change was about 2000 miles ago. i never ran the car at a low oil level.. it might be the valves. what kind of things can i do to resolve this ticking ?

Overhead cam engines don't have valve lifters perse'. They typically have a cam follower that is addjustable for the required vavle lash.

You should still be covered under the factory warranty. At the very least, the car came with a 36 month/50,000 mile warranty.

I would suspect that you have a cam follower that needs to be adjusted. As I understand it, the protege motor does not have hydralically adjusted cam followers and it's quite possible that one has lost it's lash setting. In the short term, this will not cause harm to the engine, but over many miles, it will cause excessive wear on that valve/follower/cam lobe. Adjustment will require removing the valve cover and adjusting it. I would think that this is covered under warranty. Jim
