Engine sound...typical?

Hi,

We're seriously considering buying an M5, took one out for a test drive yesterday and really liked it.

One thing I noticed, though, was that the sound of the engine when accelerating reminded me of a big vacuum cleaner (it was an automatic btw), ...have never driven a Mazda before but I've never heard a car engine sound like that. Is that typical, or did it just need breaking in?
