DSC and ABS dash panel warning lights on

FYI

I experienced something new a few days back...
Our area just got dumped with 12 cm of snow, on that day, and the traffic was backup everywhere. The drive home was fine as this happens every year and you slow down for the conditions. The snow gets all churned up on the road and it seem that you are driving in mash potatoes.
In any case about halfway through my trip home the DSC and ABS warning light turned on and stayed on. I tested the brakes and my ABS was gone, as for the DSC I could not tell as the snow was so thick. I have Michelin Pilot winter tires by the way.
When I got to an area that I could finally bring the car up beyond 30kph both warning lights when out and the ABS came back. They did not come back on for the rest of the drive or the next day. In total the storm dumped 20 cm.
I called the dealer's mechanic and he mentioned that during a first storm it is not unheard of to have this system cut out as the sensor get coated in snow/ice and freezes up.

My issue is: These systems should NOT shut down due snowy weather conditions. I would consider this as a design flaw. Of all the cars that I have driven, and I have driven all of them though major winter snow/ice storms, none have had the safety systems shut down due to icing up. I hope this is just an isolated event. Anyone else ever had a similar experience regardless of car make?

I had that happen to me once a couple of years ago, happened during some really bad snowy slushy weather. I was driving across Toronto at the time and my tires and wheel wells were just packed solid of slushy crap.

I think this is likely a common problem on cars with minimal clearance between the tires and wheel arches.
