i wonder if snowmobile helmet fits the SCCA rules of DOT approved helmet? coz i kinda want to have my own but couldn't find cheaper autox helmet. anybody knows it fits or where to buy new for $60 budget?

check out ebay...you can find some helmets for cheap and new...no they're not the prettiest things in the world...but they'll function fine...actually i've been looking for a new helmet too but i can't afford a shoei at the moment

but i don't know the scca rules for helmets so check with them first...

If it's AutoX all it has to be is Snell 2001. Not necessarily D, but at least M. I use an M rates HJC motorcycle helmet. Used it at Nationals too. Never had a question or Problem.
Downside: It was $170 new, but it matches my bike!

ummm...so not all the DOT approved helmets are Snell 2001??? and what is D and M rates???

my head is pretty small...size M loaners helmet that provided by SCCA SoloII pretty fits me...but i don't know if all the manufacturers have similar sze chart...

i also checked ebay already...HJC, KBC, Anstun are those open face helmets i am looking and CKX fullface maybe the one, too...

Dunno what "D" ratings are, but the "M" ratings are Snell motorcycle rated helmets that I assume is the minimum rated helmet qualified for autocross racing.

Snell Memorial Foundation Website has a lot of helmet info.

the website provides detail information, thanks...

and i also found that SCCA requires M90 or newer helmet, so M-95 or M2000 ratings are also good...but most ebay listings don't provide snell info...i don't know...

DOT is a lesser standard .. including helmets that are good for mopeds, etc.

Snell is a higher standard..
M for motorcycles (one-hit),
and SA for cars with rollcages (multiple-hit).

Usually you can use a helmet for 5-10 years after the Snell rating it has depending on the club/series/sanctioning body regulations.

If your car has a rollcage ... get an SA helmet. Otherwise, get whatever fits your budget.

mx6929, since you are located in Houston, you should head over to Austin this weekend to run the autocross hosted by Spokes Sports Car Club on Feb 9th. This will be my first autocross experience, so I'm pretty excited. :D

Only if I can be half as good as those who participate! :D
