Ok, dropped my car of for the Hesitation and the Clunk.
Clunk...changed bushings, and wrapped the swaybar with teflon tape (been done before for other clunk complainers). Just what I expected.
Hesitation (be prepared, I'm still venting, and I'll leave out details)
District Customer Support Manager went for a ride in my MSP. Noted that there was a bogging feeling and around 5500 rpm in second gear there was a noticable power delivery change. Did not experience the hesitation to the extent that I feel it too on a somewhat daily basis. Was able to repeat the 5500 rpm changeover 2 times out of 7. After I spoke with the Mazda Service Manager, I spoke with the Dealership Service Mgr (oversees Mazda, BMW and VW), then I spoke with the District Customer Support Manager who has been with the company for a long time (I think he said about 15 years) and has 9 years of technical experience, and has worked in almost every dept. exect product development. He agrees that there is an issue with my car and can understand why I am not happy with it. He also stated that Mazda is aware of the problem and has received some complaints about a similar issue, but the number of complaints has been relatively small. Mazda is looking into it, but they are not even sure if it is a problem...they feel it may be a characteristic of the Mazdaspeeds. I went into detail on the fact that people from this forum have hooked up an external wideband O2 sensor to the MSP and are getting extremely rich readings of 9:1 - 10:1. He understands that I have a good comprehension on how an engine runs and realizes that I know what the mapping code of a cars ECU consists of, and what catalytic converters do and soo on. He agreed (theoretically) that a less restrictive, cooler airflow that is introduced into an already rich air/fuel environment will only benefit that environment, but refused to do any performance modifications (i.e. add a CAI) to the car. He feels that there is more than likely an issue with the programming of the cars ECU...and that a newly designed system will likely encounter many programming modifications over the life of the system...even in the first 5 years...in fact, the Mazdaspeed has already received 2 changes before it was even released. He told me not to expect something immediately, but there is "likely" going to be another upgrade in this cars future (he also agreed with me that there may never be another change to this cars computer). He said, if I wanted to add a CAI, I would not be voiding my warranty, unless of coure I broke something during the install, or I sucked up water into the engine. He told me to contact Mazda Cust. Service directly. He said he would not authorize me returning my car or finding me a car that does not hesitate (or I could sell it or trade it in....DUH captain obvious, it's my car). He did keep his composure throughout most of the conversation over the 45 minutes to an hour we spoke, but I think I got on his nerves a few times (as he did to me as well). He said he would be e-mailing my situation to some people (don't remember who, but it made sense at the time...they were relevent to my problem), but he refused to cc me on the e-mail. He said that if he found anything important, he would contact me directly. This is the part I'm feeling very skeptical about with him...I asked him to contact me in writing (via letter or e-mail) that he acknowledged my issues and agreed that there was an issue with my car, and that he was contacting people to look into my situation, and to reference my case number in this letter...he refused and told me that I had to work with him and trust him (cough:wtf: cough:bs: cough).
He does say that he is not going to brush me off, and he will actively persue a (hopefully quick) resolve to my situation.
And this brings me to here. I pick up my car Monday morning. I plan to buy Joe P's FPR kit, and I plan to make myself a CAI in the near future....we'll see where everything else takes me.
Thanks for reading this, and please, if you have even the slightest stumble/hesitation/bogging with your MSP, bring it in and have them address it....also communicate with Mazda Cust. Service.
Peace,
Jesse
