Delay before automatic tranny moves forward

My sister told me today that her transmission hesitates to move the car forward when she first puts the car into drive, either from first starting the car, or first putting it into drive after going into reverse. She said it doesn't sound like it's grinding or slipping, there is just a delay.

It almost seems like an electrical problem since it only happens the first time she puts the car into drive, after that it's fine leaving from any stop.

She lives 6 hours away so I just have to go off what she said, but I figured I'd ask here and see if anyone else has the same problem.

How ironic! I had a similar problem just tonight with mine too, except when I put mine in reverse, nothing happened until I put it into drive and then into reverse again, it worked fine. My car has over half a million miles on it and works fine except for this minor intermittent hiccup. It almost seems like an electrical problem. Does anyone know what it could be? I'm mechanically inclined with engines, but automatic transmissions are my weak point.
