I have the GT model with auto-dimming, Homelink, blah-blah but does it not display the compass direction??

No the OEM mirror does not. My 16 Mazda6 without navigation card (but nav ready) has a compass in the infotainment screen.

I was disappointed to find that the Nav system has no heading on the screen or anywhere else. I can take out the card and have the compass, but what kind of lame Nav system doesn't display the heading?

There is an Accessory mirror that would pop right in but for $256

Edit: The mirror I linked is NOT compatible with cars that have the factory installed auto-dimming mirror.

yeah I also noticed this is think it's very odd. Usually just a small little compass in the upper right or left corner would suffice. Definitely an odd quirk of the system and Mazda. Maybe possibly in a future update? Anyone know of a way to submit feedback about the system?

I seldom use the navigation system. But I remember I used to see the "heading view" like every other navigation system. After I had the infotainment system OS upgrade at the dealer a couple of days ago, I noticed the navigation screen is a little different and the "heading view" is nowhere can be found???

Its definitely an over-sight. The reason I was asked was exactly this point. The darn navigation system when in 3D more does NOT display heading. How freaking odd is that? One needs to switch to one of 2D modes which I believe always point north, which I find very confusing. Thus - maybe I will need to buy one of those $3 gadgets which looks like a globe now.

My 2013 mirror with Homelink and auto dimming also shows the direction. I wonder why Mazda would change that?

Are you driving off road? I never understood compass readings in a road car. You kind of have to go were the pavement takes you.

RWORTMAN: Not always I use GPS. Furthermore, when in unknown area I tend to look at the heading to attempt going (say) always East if I know my destination is indeed East. There are multiple areas where I depend on the heading, small, small reasons. All I state is it's absolutely surprising the display doesn't show it especially when it's there.

there might be 2 different models - what does your detailed vehicle invoice say/describe ?

are you sure you got the homelink autodimming mirror WITH compass ?
is there a button on control row at far right to turn compass on and off ?
is there a small rectangular 'off colour' /darker section near the top right corner of the mirror ?

mine works fine - OEM, added with purchase

on the Nav screen, the map always is North oriented, the blue arrow shows your travel direction

If it's set to "North Up", mine is set to "Track Up" so the blue arrow points to your direction you are driving, if you are driving South, South is at the top of the screen.

What if I don't know I am indeed travelling SOUTH. That's the idea.
