Biggest 17" tire that will fit and NOT rub?

:
2008 Mazda5 GT
Looking to see who here mounted tall and/or wide 17" tires on OE rims? I'm looking at some snow tires and some deals can be found for tall-ish tires but I"m not sure if they'll rub.

Anyone tried 215/60/17?? How about pushing up to 215/65/17 (from full size sedans)?

I'm running a 225-45R18 which has a smaller diameter than the units you mention and I rub sometimes. Not very often but if I'm driving in a hurry up offense or have passengers in the rear it can rub on a dip or hard corner. It may be more due to the width than the diameter but that still sounds like a tall tire. Can you get a 195/65-17 for a good price? Skinnier tire should be better in the snow anyway right? Don't have to worry about that in Atlanta much. If it snows I just wait a day until it melts then bang on it.

I would love tall and skinny snow tires but beggers can't be choosers. As with summer tires, most people tend to think bigger and wider = better. Guess I should wait a bit for the right size. I have Toyo Versado LX all-seasons on at the moment but useable tread depth is only 4/5-32 and I get a feeling we are due for a bad/snowy winter (good and bad).

btw, are you on stock suspension? That's another thing I need to consider b/c I would 'like' to lower it 1" or so.

I don't think the 215/60/17 will work. Sucks since it is a heck of a deal.

Tire size - Diameter
205/45/17 - 24.3"
215/60/17 - 27.2"
That's almost 3" taller than stock... or a lost of 1.5" suspension travel.

rodsliner's 225/45/18 - 26" is not even as tall but rubs peridocially. I guess 215/50/18 - 26.5" is probably out of the question as well (thicker side wall summer). Granted, stock spring/sturt has a lot of droop so a stiffer aftermarket may prevent this. Search is on for something smaller.

When I did my suspension install it really didn't look like there was much room for a hugely taller tire... I wouldn't go too far over stock diameter or even your 26" tall tires. Hunting on Tire Rack really quick shows a ton of winter tires available in 215/55-17 (26.3") which seems to be about the skinniest/tallest that will work on stock wheels. There's a Firestone Winterforce in that size that's only $105 per tire.

Digging a bit more- 205/55-17 is available, but only in 5 models and for a good bit more money (starts around $150 each).

Sweet deal. Hell, buy them for $100 and sell the tires for more, depending on condition, and use that to offset the new tires.
