Ashamed of my horns

:
2008 Mazda5 GT
Am I the only one who shuns and want to hide in shame when I use my horns? Damn thing meeps, best case beeps. Aren't horns suppose to honk, like honk your horns? I don’t use it often and usually just go with the situation but there are times when you NEED to use it, like this morning when guy in front of me decides to play with his phone in the turn lane and the light begins to turn yellow already (quick light to boot)... I think this is a Mazda thing b/c I had the same experience with the Miata’s horns, I plugged in a junkyard horn to man it up (not referring to car). I have never felt so ashamed to use my horns in ANY other car. I don’t want air horns but come’on Mazda, step it up. End rant.

Yes, I have felt this way since day one but today just put me over the top b/c the idiot still didn’t move and we had to wait for another light. Part of me thinks he did not hear my horns at all.

One of my spring upgrades will be a loud low tone horn wired in parallel with the OEM.

Bahaha yes!! It's sad but true...I have the exact sentiments toward the horn. The last post in this thread is embarrassingly accurate:

Certainly will be on the lookout for an upgrade one of these days...
My horn sounds like Mickey Mouse yelling "Hey that wasnt nice"
LOL!! Now this is going to be stuck in my head when I use my horns. :/

Never driven a Honda, eh?
We've owned a '97 Civic (stolen) and '00 V6 Accord (tranny troubles but still runs/drives like a champ otherwise), both purchased new. I don't recall anything bad about the Civic horns and the Accord horns are absolutely acceptable. Are you referring to new Honda? I have no idea what they are like nowadays.

Did mine by improvising. I added a LOW tone horn from a 2008-2012 Honda Accord part #38100-STK-A02 and I used a 3M blue 14-18 gauge wire T-tap connector #952 to splice into the OEM horn wire. Then I used an insulated blade type male connector to the t-tap and an insulated spring type female connector to the horn some wire between them, mounted horn to chassis and voila!
Very nice sophisticated and loud horn. Total cost to me...$11.44 for the horn, hardware was free since I work for a dealership parts dept. :D

Quick update on the topic. I realise GT owners must be wondering what the heck these lowly Sport/Touring owners are complaing about. Since trading in my Sport for a GT (same year), I noticed right away the horn is noticeably louder -perfectly acceptable! Then I later find out the GTs come with a factor alarm, which might explain why it is louder (image the wimpy horn going off to alarm/scare a thief but instead laughing his arse off).

Man I hit my horn button accidentally all the time, and it seems SUPER loud to me. Of course, I had a Miata before this, and the horn in that car really was quiet and "tinny".

Even the horn on my 2 is noticeable louder than the 5. My wife doesn't seem to be bothered by it though. If I were driving it most of the time, I think I'd throw in a a pair of supertones. Had them in my WRX and it was a nice upgrade, though not as loud as air horns. I loved scaring the crap out of people with the air horns I had installed in my first car ('88 rx-7 se) when I was younger. Although once I had the exhaust done, just reving the engine was probably alot louder.

You are the FIRST person to say the stock horn is loud by any means. Are you sure you are on stock horns and are you a GT (alarm) or Sport/Touring? I still have my stock NA Miata meeper in a box somewhere (why did I keep it??), which I think is about equal to the Mz5 but it’s been a while since I last heard it.

The thing with horns is that is it not an everyday tool. IMO, it should ONLY be used in situations where it is important/critical to warning other drivers/pedestrians. Last thing you want is a weak horn in an emergency situation. If you are horn offender, then you should use a meeping horn.

If you want a loud horn go with hella supertones.

After debating between a few horn options, I went with FAMM 74100 El Grande - Twin Horns b/c they were cheapest ($20 shipped) and made in the US. I didn't get to install them on the Mz5 Sport before I sold it so I'll stick them in the Fit, if I ever get to. Hella is a great name but the reviews say they are not well made. If money is not an object or you simply want the best, the Nautilus is the horn to get (I kinda wish I went with that instead b/c of the low profile).

I have the GT, tho a '13 and not a '06, and the horn, hooked to the oe alarm is completely useless. Had to test it out thoroughly during a downtown marathon street closure, and i may hate the horn more so than the garbage speakers

No idea be referring to regarding a Honda horn, but I came to use it quite a bit in recent years and thought it was reasonably authoritative and effective. The Mazda horn certainly is disappointing by any other comparison that I know. My wife refers to it as a clown car horn.
