Annoying noise

My damn R/R of my car is making a rattling noise...its been there since i installed my springs, and it doesnt sound like its coming from the actual spring/strut assembly, but rather around the seatbelt mechanism...its not that loud, but it pisses me off...does anyone else have this problem, and if so what did you do to fix it? i already took off the seatbelt assembly, and put it back on and tightened the bolts hard as hell.

I got that too. It happened right after I installed the springs. It mostly happens when I go over a bump, like a speed bump or something. I was thinking that it was the seatbelt or something too. Or like I left a socket under the panels or something stupid. It is only from the rear right. I have just been too lazy to pull up the panels again...

ok mine is the same way, so long as it doesnt screw up or get worse ill be fine its just annoying...

mine is like that too! since i installed my eibach springs 16 months ago. it's never got any worse, so i ignore it. by the way, eibach could never explain it and the mechanic friend who helped me install them couldn't figure out what was causing the noise either!

Strange... I just did my springs about a month ago, so the noise is still fresh. I wont have the time to pull the panels and check everything out for a couple of more weeks. So if somebody knows what this noise is caused by, or figures it out, let me (us) know... I am not super worried about it. I have double checked all of the bolts that were loosened/removed during the installation, and everything seems fine. But I would prefer it to disappear.

dudes...

I just received my ION Sport Spec springs and had them installed on Friday...at first, it was a clunk noise, after which I went back to the shop and had them tighten everything...at that point, it's only a clicking/ticking noise...

I noticed one thing...the L/R doesn't make that noise and I put my hands in there and tried to shake the spring, but the thing didn't move...when I tried that with the R/R, I felt like the spring was moving ever so slightly...as if it's not sitting on its perch properly or it's not fit right at the top...

If anyone figures this out, let me know...it's quite annoying...

yes it is a bit annoying...maybe its a design flaw with the strut assembly on the right side

My MP3 was making some horrid noises from the Right Rear after installing the SPOOL springs. I jacked up the back only to find the swaybar endlink bolt was loose enough to turn by hand! The left rear had also come unseated at the top. So I redid the rears and locktighted the swaybar bolts. Make sure everything is tight!

i suggest that you check your jack (on the P5 at least). the way it's held in that little compartment is pretty ghetto, so over large bumps it can bang against the wheel well. that might be the sound you're hearing. also, check the lugnut wrench in your spare compartment...that might be loose and banging around as well.

i dont have my jack or spare tire in my car anymore...and i didnt need to screw with the sway bars at all to install the springs i dont think if i remember correctly

The rear swaybar linkage is bolted directly on to the strut, so it would have to be disconnected to pull out the springs, but I checked that on mine. Everything is tight. And the jack is in there good too, although that is the type of noise that a loose jack might make... I am going out of town the next two weekends, so i wont have a chance to look at it for a while.

Irritating rattle

You might want to check and make sure nothing is loose and hitting against the strut, ie brake line, especially anti-lock sensor wire/bracket, etc. When I installed my JICs there was a rattle on the R/R, it turned out to be the ABS bracket. It didn't make much sound outside the car, but any sound transfers right up the strut, then bounces off the rear window and is amplified an amazing amount. Just look for something that seems like it would be way too small, it's also helpful to have someone in the car while you rattle stuff around outside.

Good Luck,

James T

Hmm....all these noise coming from people with Tein (majority) makes me not wanna get a Tein.. :/

I am on Eibachs... I don't think that it is a poor product, probably just poor install, (It's not the arrow, its the Indian...). This was the first spring install I have ever performed or even seen. However, i did a lot of reading first on the How to section, plus I use the Handy-Dandy Mazda Workshop Manual, and it was not very difficult. My worry, however, is that the R/R was the first side that we tackled, and because of this, it was the very first spring assembly I have ever touched. I went back around the entire car after install and double checked everything, so I really don't know what it could be, but I havent really blamed the manufacturer. If somebody messed up, it was probably me. But again, the job really isn't tough... When i get a few free minutes, I will get under there againg with the torque wrench and triple check...

Alright here what you need to do to fix the noise. I had the same problem and this is what i did to fix it and make it go away.
OK bare with me hard to type it in words.

When you unbolted the strut assembly, the washer under the nut has to go a certian way when you re-assemble or the rattling noise that sounds like it is loose will haunt you.
The way to check is to pull off the inspection cover inside and you will be able to see the the bolt and washer. If the washer is installed with the curved part down, like a upside down spoon then you have it wrong. You need to remove the nut and install the washer with the curve going up, like a bowl, and then reinstall the nut and re-assemble the car. This will take care of the noise.
If you need clarification let me know, i will try and get pics or at least a simple drawing to show you.
This is what i did to fix the rattle after i put the MP3 springs on my g/f LX and it went away.

SO let me know if this helps

That makes perfect sense, and I understand what you are saying. I will try to check it tonight. I hope that is it, but I sure don't feel like pulling the panels again... Thanks for the tip...

do you have to remove the tire and whole strut assembly to do this or can it be accomplished by removing the hardware on the top?

do i need to re-rent the spring compressors, or i can do it without actually removing the spring?
