Alpine adapter to RCA = Poor quality?

I am using the alpine CD changer adapter to RCA inputs to play my ipod through my stock '02 stereo. The sound quality is terrible. Anyone have experience with this setup? How did you get yours' to sound good?

update: this morning I had my iPhone jacked into the stereo and the same normal clipping in the front. Then while it was playing I plugged in my USB car charger and it instantly stopped clipping. So honestly I am not sure why it makes it better but it does.

I found a work around solution...if the iPod is plugged into a car charger then the sound quality is perfect. If the iPod is unplugged it sound terrible.
