After quite some time the P5 needed some TLC. She was blowing some smoke from the exhaust, so I decided to do a compression test. #'s 2&4 were 20psi lower than they should have been at 140psi. This was the cause Excessive detonation!
The Goodies. I'll take more pics of individual items later as they are installed.
I bought some used Pauter Rods quite some time ago for ~$200. Steal of a deal for only another $20/ea for resizing the big ends.
Been working on some mods that will help with tuning and sensor readings. Completely milled off the EGR boss from the intake manifold, tapped the existing hole for 1/4NPT and plugged it. Then drilled and tapped the "fast acting" IAT sensor hole so that it would be right in the intake stream instead of halfway down the spigot of a 3 way coupler, where I had it before. This should do much better for air temp readings.
Also removed the nipple for the throttle body coolant line, milled it oblong for sensor to wall clearance, drilled and tapped it for an OEM coolant temp sensor. This will also give my Microtech more accurate readings.
Done alot of checking making sure everything is ready. Not quite where I want to be but getting there slowly. I've been allowed to work all of friday on it by the Queen of the House, using our "staycation" time I figure I'm due for it after the local amusement park, the zoo and the spray park with the kids on three consecutive days...
Crank runout is good at 0.0005" TIR checked on mains 2,3&4
Crank endplay is on the high side but within spec at 0.010"
Main Clearances checked. Happy with the measurements at 0.0015-0.002".
Pulled freeze plugs, capped waterjacket off, taped, glass bead blasted and painted. I'm happy with the Ford Red.
Cam journal clearances checked. some are on the tight side but it ran before with no major issues, outside of some scoring from oil contamination. That's to be expected from a 280k km head. Recondition (on a tight budget) included new valve stem seals & valve guides, remanufactured intake valves and lash checked. (I double checked all of them to be safe). Clearances are 0.001-0.0015", lash check shows all between 0.009-0.011. End play was checked as well but I don't remember the number. Blueprint is in the garage.
Got some more accomplished today but not as much as I would have liked. Went out for icecream with the family after lunch and rebuilt my son's thomas train track so he could play with something a little different.
Rod side clearances checked, high at a tight 0.011" but they're not beyond maximum so I'm happy.
Also loaded up the piston rings and checked to make sure axial clearance was ok as well as the rings having some clearance radially in the grooves. Compression rings had 0.0015", good but oil rings were 0.004" and I wasn't too sure on this one. I'll have to do some more digging to confirm my suspicion.
Only got the Pan and cooler on tonight. Started later than I planned. Luckily I have a large selection of extra bolts cuz the suction support bolt decided to break, didn't snap off completely and I was able to take it out. It broke with two fingers after the fact. I'm grateful I felt the pop when I did or I'd have had a hell of a time getting it out.
