2013 Mazda5 fuel economy has been posted on EPA.gov

2012 Mazda5 Sport AT
Click this link to go look. Mazda is keeping the powertrain the same as the 2012 model: 5AT or 6MT with the 2.5l MZR four-cylinder. This means that not only is Mazda planning on keeping the Mazda5 in the U.S. for another year, but that the SkyActiv suite won't be rolled out until at least 2014. Good to know, and not unexpected.

I just bought my 2012 Mazda 5 in October 2012. I was hopeful that the 2013 model might be available with the 2.0L Skyactive engine and 6-spd auto, in which case I would have waited for the next model year to come out before buying. Since it wasn't I was glad to buy up one of the 2012's they had on the lot. I imagine that the 2014 models, if the Skyactive and 6-spd are available then, will be accompanied by a redesign to bring them more in line with the appearance of the 2013 CX-5 and 2014 Mazda 6.

I'm not at all excited about the Skyactive stuff, I test drove a 3 with the 2.0L Skyactive, felt exactly the same (as far as power delivery) as the old 2.0L, except the car did some funny stuff that I didn't like, the 2.0L is too sluggish for me, the 2.5 was the driver's car. I just left a few comments on a youtube video from some poor guy that bought into the Skyactive stuff on a 3, his idle kicks up and almost redlines for no reason while the car is moving on the highway, I don't think he's doing it with his foot on the accel pedal. Like I said, I test drove a Skyactive 3 and it was def a NO SALE, so I'm not excited that it will be put into anymore models until its out of the experimental stages at least.

I'm averaging according to the computer in the car, 18.9mpg, that's combined city/hwy in my 5. I use the manual shifting mode about 50% of the time and full automatic another 50%. It's in line with what I expected when I bought it, the EPA numbers don't mean anything. My old 2008 Yaris was rated below 40mpg highway on the sticker, when I would drive it on the highway at no more than 65mph with no a/c and no other weight loads other than myself, I would actually net 40-41mpgs, not average.

I took the MZ5 to the Mazda dealer to look at a Skyactive CX-5. I drove an AWD auto and can say I didn't like it at all. The powertrain, that is, the rest was great. I understand the setup if MPGs are your number one priority, but I can safely say if the MZ5 had that powertrain in it when my wife test drove the MZ5, one would not be in our garage currently.

Way too much NVH on startup, and the lack of power (low-end torque) is not fun at all. Our MZ5 runs around with anywhere between 3-6 people in it frequently. The 2.5 feels peppy when solo and adequate when loaded up. No way the Skyactive 2.0/6AT would be happy at all.

I wish Mazda would bring on the diesels already installed in the MZ5 elsewhere.

I agree... no low end torque, it felt like forever to get up to speed. Time to pull out a Powerstroke Diesel out of a Ford pickup and shoehorn it into a 5... lol
