The 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was one of our best olympics ever!! It seems like the U.S. always does well when the olympics are here in the states. For those of you in Canada, the olympics will be very close to your country. Please support New York city in hosting the 2012 Olympics. All you have to do is fill out this form.

Having lived in Manhattan (and currently spending a lot of time working in the city) I personally think it's a bad idea. In addition to it costing tax payers a shitload of money (ny is already one of the most heavily taxed states) the amount of traffic would be unfathomable. From what I've read/heard NY is a long shot. (currently vegas has them at 80:1 with Paris and Madrid leading the pack. In short... the olympic games are mostly amateur sports while NY is a pro sport kind of town. Bloomberg and his billionaire friends are pushin hard for this... they could care less about the traffic and taxes... they just want to make $$$ on the real estate.

Really 80:1??? The U.S. Olympics website says it a finalists. I really just want the olympics in the U.S. anywhere

I heard 80:1 on WCBS not too long ago... but who cares? While NY is a "finalist" that doesn't mean it's got a good chance. The way I see it... everyone in the US(except those who live/work in the NYC area) is going to be foamin at the mouth to have the Olympics here. Hell, I would! But, unless they invent the flying car by 2012... it would be absolute hell!

On the website (http://www.nyc2012.com), they said that they would schedule events to avoid rush hours
Is there a time during the day that New Yorkers aren't in a rush? Seriously. Lets not forget the security issues that will arise.

Vegas would be great. The regulars will be out all night on the town and then when dawn arrives they will disappear and the events can begin with no hassle.

NYC bid for Games hinges on Jets deal

New York City will be forced to abandon its bid to host the 2012 Olympics if a deal is not reached soon on a $1.4 billion stadium for the New York Jets, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday. The plan calls for a stadium built above a rail yard on Manhattan's far West Side. But the idea has met with opposition from neighborhood residents, local politicians and civic groups. The proposed stadium would house the Jets and anchor the city's bid for the Olympics. Under the proposal, the Jets would spend $800 million and the city and state would add $300 million each.

Exactly what NYC needs...just like the RNC...and a hole in the head. The local economy is still hurting from that RNC fiasco- it shut many businesses down for the week because it was such a $hit storm to get anywhere. Too much, too soon for a city with plenty of problems as it is...Help it out, don't bog it down.
Also, could you imagine the toughts of patrons from outside the US thinking, "what the hell is that unhuman smell, and why is no one stopping that man who is yelling at himself from urinating on the curb?"
(shrug)

just MHO though :)
