151MPH in the MSP

Antoine - thanks for the vote of confidence and you are very right about the safety aspect. That would be a main priority for me above all else. I just think it would be a really neat goal that would create a really neat car.

I am wondering about the upgraded valvetrain, because my bottom end is bullet proof, but other than a port/polish we didnt touch the valvetrain. Does anyone know what options there are out there for upgrade valvetrain? I know corksport sold eibach valve springs, but other than that i havent heard of anything.

Wow, those are some famous last words....

I'm thinking you'll definitely need more than 300 hp to reach 180 mph. I'm no aerodynamic engineer, but it's basically function of the frontal area and the coefficient of drag. There's a formula somewhere that will tell you how much hp you need if you know the other two numbers.

Your motor must be strong as hell, because my stock MSP takes quite a while to get from 100-120 (which is as far as I've taken it). I get the impression that our cars are not as "slick" as some others might be.

I'm all for you building the world's fastest Protege, but if you're going to do it please be safe about it.

I respect your Project, but question the car you start with...

I'm shooting for 180 MPH as well, but the car I am doing it in is already faster than 159 MPH now, I just paid $2500.00 USD for it... WTF.

msprotege.com, finding every possible use for a defunct sport sedan other than the one it was intended for.

I've accepted the fact tham my car is slow except for cornering and even that needed $4000.00 to make better...

Tough crowd. Its possible but extremely stressfull on the engine to push it that fast.

Anything is possible with money. I could have a Protege 5 Attack Plane, but I don't make funds to back a project like that.

One thing that is for sure. The final drive will have to be custom made to be taller accross the board. The Engine redline is not really the issue. The car could have the HP required just by upping the boost. It is as he said, Built and not the problem when concerned with Top Speed. It's all gearing which is my current problem with the 944 Project.

Lucky Porsche has fixed that problem for me, The 968 Six Speed transmission is a bolt on to the 944...

Wow, I just checked this thread and I love it....I think some of my previous statements need back up....I did have an encounter with a AMG on the highway about 2 years ago...on an automatic P5 with the HiBoost kit at about 14 psi. When we stopped the guy couldnt believe he couldnt shake me off, so we talked for some time and his claim was that we were over 150 mph. I didnt have my speedo to check since we stop at 140. But we where definetely past that mark. I cant tell if the over drive on an automatic helps you with the gearing, but it was fast and scary...even though the car was lowered, it felt too light and tracked on the pavement. Didnt do it again.

Regarding the aerodynamics of Proteges, they are like a block, it takes a Corvette C6 405hp and a huge overdrive gear to reach 180mph and then GM claims it is drag limited. I'am not saying it cant be done...since a lot of imports run the Salt Flats at speeds over 150 with some aerodynamic work.

I have done over 165 on the NSX with my friend on his Porsche (his speedo is exact) and this cars are meant to go this fast, they feel steady and solid on the pavement. That noise from your door seal, is the rush of air holding you up, at this speeds my NSXs tires hit the inner fender from the downforce  so there is a lot of forces been enacted, you should take the windshield wipers off, if not they will fly off!!

Good luck! Hope to see your baby fly...no punt intended. ;)

Thanks for the insight. Dont get me wrong, I was planning on purchasing an NSX this winter until I lost my job. I think it would be much better to start with a platform like the NSX knowing it was made for that type of speed (the speedo reads 180... that makes me smile) but now due to financial constraints I have to hold off on my dream car for yet another year.

One thing you mentioned was the need for aerodynamic work, and I think that you are correct on this. Removal of the wipers would be the first thing, but the entire car, including the underside would really need to be cleaned up aerodynamically. I have wanted to make underbody diffusers for the car for quite sometime because they actually do make a huge difference on high speed cars like the NSX or orther exotics. Once again, i think projects like that would add to the overall coolness factor of a car built to these specs, regardless of it actually being tested to 180.

thats what i thought of when you said make the underside more aero dynamic.

not sure if that does much, maybe thats there to protect the diffs more but thats what came to mind.

You are right...the coolness would be worth it...just imagine at a show, with the car tilted on one side and showing all the diffusers and a sign saying speed limit 180, hehehe. The NSX-R comes with front and rear diffusers to keep air from having turbulence in the engine and front bays.
