1.8L Coil conversion

Bump!

Is the 2000 626 1.8 valve cover really needed? How much tinkering will I have to do with my 2.0 valve cover?
Also, if I do go to the wreckers to pick up a 626 valve cover, is the gasket different from the 2.0 gasket?

the cam cover makes everything fit back together the way it was designed. you CAN reuse the 2.0 protege cam cover, but you will have to modify the plug wires to fit down onto the plugs. the 2.0 cover sits ever-so-slightly higher than the 1.8 above the plugs. i was getting random misfires on my set-up before i was able to find the proper cover.

gaskets swap over, but they are also a low cost part. i changed mine out when i did the conversion for peace of mind.

Thanks for the info. I asked about the gasket because I recently refinised my valve cover.. so that gasket is 1 month old :P

Looks like i'll take a trip over to the wreckers and grab myself a 1.8 valve cover then. Thanks again!

yup i did the 1/8 cpnversion i used the 1.8 valver cover and coils its a much cleaner look u just have to cut the black tape to open the wire loom and reroute the wires...... and then buys some split loom and cover the exposed coil wires tape it up n ur done. 1-2 hrs tops for the swap

On the mazda 626 valve cover that I picked up from the wreckers I do not have this part that I am pointing to in the picture... uh wtf?

And the highlighted red area, that tab needs to be removed in order to put the coil mounting bracket.. where can/should i move it too?

you have the wrong cover, take it back and get the one with the cam sensor spot. the other pieces can be moved to any bolt that is close, i think mine are just all together under the manifold.

Thanks Bikingpro.

F***!

Doesn't your coil mounting bracket have bolt holes for those 2 wires you remove from the highlighted bracket? Mine did. I simply unbolted them from the oem bracket and rebolted them to the 1.8 coil bracket in the same spot. And yeah, make sure the 626 vc is 2000-2002, those have the cam sensor mounting spot.

Anyone using/used these plugs on their 1.8 coil/wire conversion? They work fine in the 2.0?

What should our plugs be gapped to?

i am..they work fine. i left them at whatever they were gapped at. ..the whole setup revs noticeably more smoothly

I too am running those sparks. Personally, I don't find any gains in this mod. It does look a lot better in the engine bay though.
