Zoom Zoom BOOM - I joined the blown up club.

So, just to be clear here, and going back to an earlier part in the thread... Is it safe to assume that some forged rods would be of great help, considering that we make so much low down torque? What about a GT series turbo that would simply spool up a little later? I know mazda tested this motor at over 300hp, I'm still left wondering...why a K04 mazda?! I think something comparable, with a little more lag may be in order for me over the next year or so.

If you want slower turbo spool-up, use an aftermarket boost controller.
The fast turbo spool up is very much a function of the ECU.

so what ever happend with build??lol my engine blew up but it wasnt because of something screwing up it was because national tire and battery didnt put my filter on correctly and i lost 3 quarts of oil in like 4 miles and i heard that like rattling sound pulled over and oil was all over by the passanger side and all over the ground...it ended up costing ntb 7200 for a used motor...but it all depends on the dealership i believe some are abs pricks..you buy a intake and they void your warrenty then you have dealerships that will install aftermarket parts for you and what not

You are simply wrong. Turbo spool up is a unique function of the size/configuration/flow characteristics of the turbine (hot) section of the turbocharger. I run WG only (no ECU control) most of the time on my Speed6 and the little turbo is ready to go at ~1500 rpm on up. I can control the max boost value at any given rpm (the lower value is set by the turbo/wastegate selection itself, NOT the boost controller) with the ECU tuning. I typically run it to 21 psi when "needed". Otherwise it is ~15 psi on the wastegate.

Do you fully understand the function of the factory boost controller?

It does more than control the max. boost pressure.

Really? Would a boost controller slow the spool, I assume by keeping the wastegate open longer before feeding boost?

A good (closed loop) electronic boost controller (including the factory setup) controls the wastegate opening before the target boost pressure is reached.

The idea is to make the turbo spool up quickly by keeping the wastegate closed during spool-up.

One bad thing about the factory setup: It isn't adjustable (i.e. you can't change the mathematical constants). This causes boost spikes in cars with mods, especially downpipes and test pipes.

I really, really, really want to add an intake and a rear MM, but I'm not touching my engine until there's an official fix for this s***.[/QUOTE]

Go on msf under the engine section. Its starting to look like these motors are destined for failure unless ya go forged. We are startin to see signs of wear due to partial crank walk and also forging imperfections. Mazda will never do a recall on their supposed flagship car now. Hate to be so negative but its lookin that way big time

You know what I say (fu) all the worrying . It's like swiming in the ocean, yea there are sharks in there and one can attack you . If you like then ocean and like to swim just do it.. I bought my car before reading threads like this and was so freaked out:eek::eek:, I wrote Mazda corperation:: below is the letter I sent them. Oh yes I did get a call from a customer service REP who gave me reasurance. I no longer think about s*** like this and if my motor does BLOW I will do my best to fight this EVIL EMPIRE and all of it's cronies... so frig the worrying like they say s*** happens and when it does then I will worry!!!

Subject: Concerns on new purchase

I am writing this memo requesting clarification on my recent purchase of a 2009 Mazdaspeed 3. First off ,I am not the targeted market for this type of car. I am 51 years old and for years I always wanted a sports type car that would not put me in the poor house. I was searching the net one day and came across a review on the 2008 speed3. After reading the comments , I said wow what a great car. So on June 18, 2009, I purchased my new speed 3 in Metro grey. Having previously leased a Acura97 Tl and 00 Nissan maxima, this was my first new car purchase ever. I have logged about 1800 miles so far and it appears to be what the reviewers said it would be , except for one thing. I was unaware of the large number of engine failures from this turbo motor. So I researched more and I am in shock. I bought this car for the driving experience not to be worried that if I dont drive it correctly , I will throw a rod out the side of the block. I have owned this car less than 2 months and I feel sick to my stomach about this purchase. I am ready to unload this car before this motor blows. The problem is, even tho I got this 09GT for $22,600 and put $5000 down I still owe more than what the car is worth adding in the tax, gap, insurance, sealant, roadside repair. Please explain why Mazda would put a motor into production knowing that the rods were inferior ???
I videoed taped my first oil change and I am keeping receipts for genuine OEM filters and proper grade oils. I am hearing the horror stories of Mazda trying to get out of paying warranty claims . Your organization seems to go out of its way and try to prove abuse and neglect as not to pay for repairs. Put on a cat back exhaust, voided warranty. Put on a cold air intake, warranty voided. I am afraid to even hang a air freshener on the rear view in fears of having my warranty voided. I can understand voiding a warranty where a person altered the tune and gave it more boost and a lean mixture and the altered timing was the source of the failure No !! I am not the average 24yr old that is gonna beat this car, change the computer program for more boost and shift it @ 7k . I just want to experience a good running, good handling car that is fun to drive. The stories I hear of stock motors, some with maybe a different air intake like the MS cold air intake that Mazda sells puking rods out the side. The fear of driving this car is like playing Russian roulette. I shouldnt have to feel like this with a new car. The car I owned before this was a 2000 Hyundia Elantra with 150,000 miles logged I bought it with 114K on the odometer and the only issue I had was a broken wire to the altenator and that made it go bad.. From what I read the way this motor makes torque and the low RPM at which peak torque is reached. This really puts stress on the rods in this motor. This motor makes torque like a diesel , at a very low RPM but the durability of its components, does not meet demand

I am really stressed, learning about the large number of failures and that makes me NOT enjoy driving this car. I want to feel the full potential of this vehicle. I am trying to avoid driving this car wrong. I will not shift past 5500 rpm I will not lug the motor in 6th gear below 2300 rpm. I will always run a 93 octane rating for fuel. With that said motors are failing at part throttle and or just cruising down the road. I havent even paid the second payment yet and I already hate this car.. I really thought I was buying my dream sports car, fun to drive , fast and with decent fuel mileage at a reasonable price. I now totally regret buying this car and it is my first new car purchase ever!! Please try to explain why Mazda went ahead and put this platform in the 2010 line-up.. Very saddened about this whole buying experience , any advise will help..

So what did the rep say?

+1.. im assuming they just said to keep the car stock and u wont have to wory about it... personally i feel like its a hit or miss with these things, nuttin much u can do. do as i do, dont hit boost. its not necessary to hit boost evrytime the car moves, imo. spool when u need 2.

Actually this letter didn't fall on DEF ears. I got a call from Mazda about 10 days after sending it and the REP was a younger Female. She tried to reasure me that the MS3 was an excellant car, she owned a 08 in black herself. She stated that there was no flaw in design but the failures were from extreme neglect and abuse by younger drivers. unsafe tunes and redline shifts. She advised me that some of these forums are breeding grounds for trouble and not to believe everything that people say. I said I beg to differ BUT pictures don't lie, and that you don't see 500HP corvettes puking rods out the side . We went back and forth with issues I thought we wrong on Mazda's part... Note!!! that they avoid paying warranty claims on cars with very little or No mods. Ofcourse she sided and was bias with Mazda saying they are fair and would not intentionally screw anyone over and they stood behind their product 100% I felt like saying (fu) you **** bastard but I stayed cool. I got to say what I wanted and got it off my chest and hoping that fateful day don't come anytime soon. Still I feel like I am walking through a mine field with this car except I don't worry too much about where I step. I figure:: keep it in BOOST ::hang on with the torque steer and enjoy for now!!!(headbang)

No CX7 has a standard transmission. So I am thinking that the give (slippage) in the automatic disperses the torque a little more evenly, rather than our spike.

The ecu in automatic vehicles usually is tuned to lessen torque spikes/boost onset to let the slushbox live longer. That may be why CX-7's don't have this issue. Maybe we should be looking at the stock ECU tuning of the CX-7 for answers.

Personally... I'm saving up for upgraded rods before mine blows. Why replace more than you have to..

Deaf ears or don't listen. The outcome is still the same.

Well said.

Absolute bulls***... They've intentionally screwed me over because they don't stand behind their product or the warranty that came with it.

I felt like saying (fu) you **** bastard but I stayed cool.

Good for you

Good luck to all of you.

jebus....so you haven't had any personal problems with your car? You are simply worrying based off posts on an Enthusiasts forum? If you actually search diligently, you will find maybe a handful of stock motors blowing...that's all, and what's the percentage rate on something like that.....001% of vehicles... The rest are indeed modded, usually incorrectly. Like you said, you are not the target demographic for this car...and unfortunately the target demographic tends to beat the hell out of this car. Best advice is to enjoy your car and stay off the internet, because you are going to find blown motors on any car that has an enthusiast forum...even Corvette's.

If you read his original post on this subject you will note that he says that he USED to worry about this stuff. So much to the point that he felt the need to write a letter to Mazda.

He has since realized exactly what you just told him he needs to realize and no longer worries about stuff like this.
