XelderX's BG FSP Build

Found out today after reading some interwebs that 3rd Gen struts will fit the BG chassis with some very slight modification. Looks like I'll be calling AWR again for some more coilovers.

Do you want my coilovers? AWR's with Bilstein shocks (shortened), 325#front, 600#rear springs. I don't know if the camber plates will fit your 1st gen, but if you want me to include them too....

Yes I do but I don't have any money for them and probably won't until after Nationals. I'll need to send the rears back to AWR, but the fronts will bolt right up.

Sounds like that might work out just fine. I am going to keep running my car in FSP for the rest of the season (maybe even go to nationals). I have a couple new things I want to try out before I give up and start to sell off stuff.

Do you need a tire warmer for Nats?...I don't have a ride yet.

No co-driver for nationals yet. There's a guy down here that I might co-drive with locally, but I don't know if he would be going to nationals or not.
If you happen to have any *extra* parts that you might like to lend, that might lock you in! :)

Jason's car looked hella fast and smooth at the Walnut Ridge Tour.

Definitely take that thing to Nationals. IIRC, it could use some racing seats.

I think racing seats would great. For tires, I've been running 225-50-14 Kumho V710's. But I need to get a new set in a couple weeks. Any recommendation of Hoosier vs Kumho?
I'll send you a PM with the specifics on the car and some of the other plans I want to do in the next couple of weeks.

Nice choice on the BG. I always thought they would make a more competetive FSP car anyway, with the lighter weight AND miata engine! Check out http://www.clubprotege.com
Its a board basically dedicated to the BG chassis. There's alot available for that car, more suspension stuff than the BJ! There's a guy on there (naprotejay?) with a 150WHP NA car that's not TOO far off of an FSP build. I'd think you'd be able to get near to or better than the results you got with your 5.

Good luck!

How about some updates!

I finally got around to getting serious about this project. Actually, I finally got done with a long list of other projects that kept getting in then way. The BP motor is getting ready to come out of the car. I've changed plans on the motor just slightly. Going back into the car will be my FSP prepped 2.0L FS-DE motor and G15 transmission out of the old Protege5. I'm going to give this an honest effort to make it work and try to keep it SP legal. This is going to be tough since some things will swap over really easy and some not so easy. The easy part looks to be the engine and drivetrain. Thanks to those always clever innovators down in Puerto Rico, we now know that the FS-DE and tranny are a near direct bolt in to the 1st Gen Chassis. I just need to find myself a set of '95-'97 Kia Sephia motor mounts.

The really tough part about this swap is going to be the wiring harness and power steering lines. The FS-DE and BP motors are wired similarly, but the routing of the wires and location of the ECUs are different. SCCA SP rules on wiring harnesses:

E. Wiring harnesses may not be removed in whole or in part. Wiring
connectors for emissions control devices are considered part of
the harness, not part of the emissions control system, and may
not be removed.

and the update/backdate rule that will certainly apply:

C. Equipment and/or specifications may be exchanged between
different years and models of a vehicle if (a) the item is standard
on the year/model from which it was taken, and (b) the years/
models are listed on the same line of Appendix A (Street Prepared
Classes). The updated/backdated part or the part to which
it is to be attached may not be altered, modified, machined or
otherwise changed to facilitate the updating/backdating allowance.
Standard factory installation methods, locations, and configurations
are allowed. The updating and/or backdating of engines,
transmissions or transaxles must be done as a unit; component
parts of these units may not be interchanged. Cars not
listed in the Street Prepared sections of Appendix A may not be
updated/backdated until approved by the SEB and published in the official SCCA publication.

The power steering pump on the BP is mounted very low in the engine bay on the block. On the FS it is mounted high on the head. This may cause some hose routing issues. I want to use the 1st Gen reservoir since the 3rd Gen one has nowhere to mount properly in the 1st Gen engine bay. Plumbing the older reservoir to the newer pump and then down to the steering rack is a complete unknown right now.
