XelderX's BG FSP Build

I'll probably be using the SuperPro bushings for the trailing arms as they are pretty cheap, but they aren't easy to get a hold of. I haven't decided what route I'm going to take on the lateral links yet, but I like the way you did it. I'll probably be buying a set of Ingall toe links from Will Kalman's Escort which should hopefully have some nice stiff, bushings already installed.

If it helps the 91' ford escort, the mercury tracer and the protege are all the BG chassis and at least the brakes calipers in the rear are the same as long as it has disk brakes. You might see if the DX of the same or close year ever came with disks in the rear.
Just my .02

I'm pretty sure all the DXs had drum brakes in the rear. That may be something I can convert to, but I'll need to check the spindles to see if they allow for the 13" rims. The drums would be pretty pointless to swap if they didn't offer me any more room for smaller rims. I can get the wheels to clear the calipers easily, but that stupid nub on the spindle will still be there.

You'll need to paint the drums with gold paint, then write "drumbo" on them in red letters...

I went by the dealer today and looked at the parts drawing for the DX (drums) and LX (disks) rear spindles. They do have different spindle designs and the drum spindle doesn't have the little tab sticking out that is in my way. I decided that I didn't want to swap to rear drums so that is all a moot point for me. Other people reading this though...if you want to run 13" rims you'll need the DX rear spindles/brakes. I started doing some measuring in the rear fender well to see what a 15" rim would need. Running a 15" rim with 6" of backspacing should clear with just a small spacer depending on the bulge of the tire. I'm going to run 15X8" rims and it looks like they will be pretty close to even with the outer edge of the fender. That makes me feel better, because I was worried that they were going to stick out a lot. With the suspension at the ride height I want I will have about 1.5" of travel before the tire would hit the stock fender and 2.5" of strut travel before it was hitting the bumpstop. I can take 1" out of the fender and that should give me plenty of room to keep the tire from rubbing.

Not much going on this week. I'm waiting for my paycheck/rebate check to order the header, exhaust and wheels. I did get around to installing the driver's seat and steering wheel hub.

Well, I got the rear suspension mounted up yesterday so that i could figure out the rear wheel offset. From the looks of things I won't be able to run a 13" rim in the back. There is a pointless bit of metal on the spindle that would hit the wheel with them tucked in where I need them and they may not clear the brakes...my test rim was barely rubbing the caliper. 14" rims aren't much of an option right now unless spending big bucks for custom Kodiaks or the like. It looks like the car will be getting 15" rims front and back now with the 15X10s (275/35-15) up front and 15X8 (225/45-15) in the back until I decide if expensive lightweight rims will be worth it.

Kalman's car had the wheels sticking out quite a bit, IIRC. I was grided next to him in 2006 in Topeka, but I can't remember what the rears looked like. There is a possibility the rear spindles are different on his Escort. That is where my main interference would be. I'm pretty sure the front spindles are different between the BG and the Escort, but not sure on the rears. I keep forgeting about 949 making those wheels. I'll be checking in with them. I need to do some calculating on that offset. I have so much stuff running through my head right now that I'm lucky I can remember my own name. I have trouble falling asleep at night, because I'm constantly thinming about what I need to finish up on the car.
I was talking with Jesse Naughton about your problem with the 13's. This what he sent me:
I think you were mentioning that Justin was having problems fitting 13's over the rear.

Will Kalman, David Avard, Joe Graves and others have fit 13's over the front and rear of the Protege LX/EGT front and rear brakes on their FSP cars. So maybe Justin should get ahold of one of them. I have contact info for Will and David, but I think Joe fell off the face of the earth.

I'll install the other seat tomorrow and hopefully swap my APR wheel studs from the Protege5 hubs. My replacement Koni race insert arrived today, but I couldn't install that strut. The AWR upper spring perch was mangled too badly in the accident for me to repair (I tried real hard). Tony at AWR is shipping me a new one, but it will be at least a week before I see it.

I emailed Will about it, but he couldn't remember what offset wheel he was running or how it lined up. I'm happy with running the 949 Racing 15s right now. They are cheap and light so I don't feel like I'm really sacrificing anything. I need to get the car finished as quickly as possible so I can start sorting it out and this will be the fastest way to get it running.

My SanDisk card reader for the digicam isn't working so no new pictures. I'm not doing much at the moment. Waiting on some parts from Cali and Atlanta. The Momo seats are in and the steering wheel in. I installed a set of poly bushings in the rear trailing arms and got all 4 struts in and bolted down. The only big things left are Exhaust, wiring, swaybars, wheels/tires.

Aluminum exhaust?

Not right now. I need something simple to get the car running so I can start sorting it out. There won't be much piping anyway. Just a short straight pipe from the cat to the muffler which will sit right in the middle of the car exiting just behind the front seats. Once I get the car mostly figured out I will spend more time taking off some weight. I have a contact that can weld titanium so some thin walled Ti piping for the exhaust and intake might be a cool edition.

This is so cool, I can't wait for you to get it going! What are you using for EMS again, the Unichip still or did you get a Microtech?
