If I lived closer, I would give you a hand with the install!

Concerning the water lines, I will see if I can take a pic for you when I get out of work. There is a pretty simple way to do it... The old (not the current) directions from the hiboost turbo kit showed an easy way to route the water lines... I did a lot of research on this when I had my MP3 and planned on turbo'ing that :)

Thanks, let me know. Depending on how it is, I may just buy the stock MSP water line stuff, and just use the braided stainless steel for ze oil lines. I need to check over other people's turbo install threads to see how they did the oil lines so that I can figure out what lengths to order for stuff.. can't just trim the stainless steel stuff like you can rubber lines :(

Man you should be getting ready to share all this info you've gathered about the turbo stuff, cause I'm gonna be asking you so many questions when you get yours done.

I shall call you Sensei Kansei

Good luck... hope everything comes out great for you...(first)

I'll be putting together a lot of the info I've gathered since it hasn't been nearly as straightforward as I thought it would. I'll link to the thread when I make it :)

meanwhile.. I still don't know how long I need for oil supply and return lines haha.

Take a piece of string and route it as you would the oil lines and then measure how much string it took and add a lil extra just in case... You cant extend lines after they've been cut, and a lil extra slack wont hurt anything.

I want them to be precise, especially the drain. I want the drain to be as direct as possible. I'll try with the string, though I can't know exactly where the turbo will sit until I mount it to the mani and get it in there.

You could take off your NA headers and mount the turbo and mani to measure.

well I do have the studs for between the manifold and turbo. I just don't think I'll have time to test fit the turbo until I get back after the holiday, which is when I was going to start the turbo install.

If you want any help (and you are doing the install in Rochester) you can stop over and take a look at the race car. The turbo motor is out right now but still intact. As well, I can give you some ideas for the oil pan....

Tom

I am doing the install in Rochester. I have decided on using the pan for the oil return instead of the windage tray because doing it to the pan should theoretically be much easier.

At this point I'm more concerned about what I'm doing for the coolant supply and return. For the oil, I at least know where my oil feed source is and where it is being returned, what fittings I need, etc.

Man, all you Northern guys and your closeness to eachother. I would love to be able to head up there and have a huge install meet (and meet MP3Racer as he was an amazing help and I'm sure his shop is amazing). I'm actually rather knowledgeable of that area and I might be up in Seneca County (not too far from Rochester) later next week although I had not planned to bring my turbo parts and install them. Although now I might just have to change my mind...

you can do that later

MP3racers car is (shocked)(shocked)(shocked)

plus, if I ever need a new FS-DE I know who to call haha.

Well, whatever help you need let me know.....the race car has the stock coolant system for the turbo if you need to look at it. I also have the exploded diagram from Mazda.

Of note to all, a very good race fabricator and cage builder (who has built numerous Spec Miata race cars) has just moved to Rochester. If you need someone to fab up the oil pan for you (weld on the bung for the oil return), let me know and I can get you in touch with him....

Diagram, eh? I just don't even know where the stock setup supplies coolant from. I know it routes it back to the oil filter to go through the oil cooler, but I don't know where that supply comes from. I didn't want to just T-off of the top hose on my radiator, mainly for visual reasons (I want this to look a little bit discrete).

good to hear about the race fabricator.

The stock setup has a few hard lines that attach to the block and a neat little added part to the rubber hose elbow on the front of the block. Probably would be best to just take a look at the setup. If needed I can try to take some pics....

I'll have to look at parts diagrams and see about the added part for the elbow. I figured the elbow was going to be the place they sourced it from, so close to the turbo. I'll be coming back to Rochester Tuesday night so I'll let you know Wednesday if I haven't determined a solution by then.

good luck with the build this week!
let me know if you want an extra pair of hands or anything,
I'm most likely going to be heading to rochester on thursday or so..

ok it is now the time to move discussion over to here

http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123648378 my thread in the FI section where I'll discuss the build. I've been working on assembling the manifold/turbo/downpipe today, currently nothing has been disassembled on the car. I'll probably wire and calibrate the wideband today, though I won't have the O2 bung to install it until the turbo is mounted up.
