Wrx Psshhh Psshhh?

A few days ago a guy in a heavily modded-looking WRX pulls next to me on a stoplight and looks like he wants to race. I decline and watch him take off and follow driving normally, and notice the WRX is making some weird sounds. Basically it goes like vroooom...psshhh...vrooom...psshh. The "Psshh" sound is as loud as the engine "vroom" sound, and it happens between every shift. I am barebones stock, never modded any of my cars, so I don't know what that is, but I am curious.

you actually have one on your car right now, its just not very audible. pop the hood and if you look at the bottom right hand corner of the intercooler, you will see a black plastic piece, this is your BPV (by pass valve)

yea he is serious...are you? the purpose is mainly for sound on some cars, upgrading BOV can increase performance by holding more psi. Our cars are supposed to recirculate the air which is less audbile than VTA. i have vta for now cuz i like the sound and its great for taunting (headbang)

Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a dousche. I didn't realize he was serious about asking what a BOV is. I didn't read through the end of his post saying he hasn't modded before. I do appologize

Where in Iowa are you located? I've got some friend in Newhall and Venton. Thier parents are actually down here right now escaping the lovely weather you're having up there

I'm in the Des Moines area. I'm not from here originally, though. I'm from the tropics, can you imagine? And yea, lovely weather in Iowa :/

Thanks for that Wikipedia article. I am a total automobile-technical newb, but wanting to learn more in my older age.

So I do have one of those things, just not as loud, huh? I wonder if this is the cause why my MS3 did not beat the crap out of me when I stalled it as my previous Audi S4 did. Whenever I stalled my S4 I got whiplash, but the MS3 just goes off without a bang.

The BOV/BPV has nothing to do with the harshness of a stall.

You do have a BPV. If you decide to mod the car, a cold air intake (CAI) will allow you to hear the turbo spool and the wssssh of the BPV. It will not be as distinguished as the Subaru's until you upgrade the BPV.

I wonder, Has anyone replaced the stock BPV with a forge unit on recirc and if so how do they know which spring is the correct amount of tension? Does anyone know of any problems with adding the forge unit?

We had a small number of valves early on that weren't assembled correctly but the fix was fairly simple.

Other than that it seems that some people are having problems with the factory fuel pump providing enough flow when they have a certain amount of bolt-ons. Our valve can uncover this limitation as it "adds" a few psi.
