Wrinkle Paint on Valve Cover Q

After searching every auto parts store and specialty paint store that I could find, I could only come across black wrinkle paint. I even had a few specialty paint stores tell me that nobody makes wrinkle paint anymore, even though I kept insisting that I had just held a can of black in my hands... So I figured that I would have to buy off the net and pay crappy shipping fees. So I go home and look up VHT Wrinkle Plus, and I found Saturn Motorsports carry it. There are Saturn Motorsports stores at most (at least in San Diego) Saturn Dealers. They had it in stock and it is only $5.45 instead of the $9.00 and $15.00 plus shipping that I had seen on the web.

So I got red (VHT PN is SP-204 if anybody cares), some finishing buffs for the dremel, and some 200,400, and 600 grit sand paper. I need some high temp primer and I am ready. I am going to try to do this this weekend. Pics to follow...

Wow! That was easy. I prepped and painted both the valve cover and heat sheid (heat sheild is in 1200 degree black) in about 3 hours. The Heat sheild got 5 coats and the valve cover got 4.

The wrinle paint is some crazy stuff. I have never seen it before. I painted it and then brought it inside to accelerate the "wrinkle" with a heat gun. I was drying it for like 20 minutes and it was still so glossy and not wrinkly that it looked wet. I figured that I must have done something wrong and would just have to strip it and start over again, but almost instantly the shine dulled and that thing turned really wrinkly. It says it is fully cured in 48 hours, so I guess I will wait to put it back on, but so far it looks good.

I will try to borrow my neighbors digicam. My gf has mine...

If anybody cares, I learned something if you are planning on sanding down the raised letters. First before you start painting, sand the letters very smooth. I used 600 grit, but you could go even more. Then when you are finished painting and you want to start sanding, take the paint off carefully with a razor blade first. You can get most of the paint off before you even start sanding and it will save you a lot of time sanding...

Thanks for the help guys. The How-To was nice too, although it was pretty easy to figure out once I got brave enough to crack open my car...

Oh yeah, Does anybody know where I can get my hands on a MSM oil cap? Will it even fit?
Yes it fits and they are $50.00 at the dealer...

Just find a MSM and steal it!!(boom07)

Another idea is to polish the aluminium one down with 140 Grit-200-400-800-1000-1500-2000-Then 8 Micron and then some metal polish compound!! It's also on paper able to allow heat out better than the paint!!

GHETTO FAB!!!

Yeah, my boss wanted me to polish it instead of paint it. I am just not a fan of the shiny look. A little to blingy for me. Not to disrespect anybody's VC if that is what they did, just not my taste. I actually am going to paint the CAI flat black too, even that is too shiny.

Thanks for the link Majik...

I got my red from a Saturn dealer (yeah, I know) for around $5. They had to order it but it came the next day.

Did not use primer, but I sanded the whole thing for like half an hour with the dremel, and another half an hour by hand. Follow the instructions on the can. I ended up using 4 coats I think. It has held up fine except where the grease monkeys at the dealer scratched it while replacing the TB, IM, Fuel Rail, and a bunch of other parts... I sprayed the engine down with some simple green a couple of weeks ago, and it looks great!
