We've been shopping for a car for a little bit now, say 90 days or so. We've been looking hard at the BMW and Volvo SUV's. That took us to look at some of the domestic offerings from Chevy/Buick/GMC as well as the Toyota Highlander.

On a total lark, my wife asked me if Mazda had any SUV's. We've not stepped foot on a Mazda dealers' lot in over 20 years. My first new car was a Mazda B2000 pickup way back in 1988. I ran the wheels off that truck, it blew the engine at 185K miles and that was that.

So I hit Edmunds and sure enough, saw the CX9. We hadn't been looking there at all but figured what the heck, lets go see it.

That was 10 days ago. Tonight, I leave in 30 minutes to pick up my 2010 CX9 Grand Touring AWD rig. Fully loaded with everything but the rear entertainment system, sticker of just under $41K with all accessories + ipod module with an out the door price of just over $36K ($39K with TTL...damn sales tax!). We'd been looking at vehicles costing more than $20K over that amount that had fewer features, got lower ratings and just flat out didn't prove as much fun to drive as the Mazda.

Welsome. My first new car was a 1987 Mazda B2000 SE-5. I paid $7000 for it. It was gold with the brown sport stripes down the side and white spoked wheels. The truck lasted 15 years in Wisconsin and was never garaged.

One week after I got I drove 1000 mile to Dallas. Sweet little truck that handled everyhting I gave it.

I also checked out the others you mentioned and the design, features, and value was tops in my opinion.

Lol, my first car was a 1984 Mazda B2000. Got it for my 18th bday in 1996. It was missing 2nd gear, refused to start most of the time so i always made sure I parked it on a hill. :) After I replaced the transmission and bought a couple of new batteries it was a little more reliable.

Welcome to the forum.

Similiar story with me. I didn't know the CX9 existed until I did a generic search on carmax for 7-seater + AWD and saw the CX9 for sale. We were really close to getting the Highlander, but once we test drove the CX9 we bought it.

My neighbor recently bought a Hyundai Vera Cruz. She used to own a Mazda MPV, and she says she misses the handling of the MPV over the VC. I told her last night that I'd bought a CX-9, and she had never heard of it. I think she's going to be bummed when I let her drive it.

The highlighted text above is exactly how we felt. We looked at the XC90, X5, MDX and Benz GL and R classes. All were $10-30k more MSRP and all offered, at best, the same features as the CX9. In some cases ([cough]XC90 and GL/R[/cough]) the 20k pricier car was completely outclassed, and few (other than the GL and the GM Lambda cars (Outlook/Enclave/Acadia) offered as much interior passenger and cargo room.

Of course, it didn't hurt that, in the fall of 2008 with the financial markets crashing, we basically stole one a loaded GT for $31k.

If I had to do it again, my choice would be the exact same.

Welcome to Mazda Forums and Congrats on the new CX-9! (hi)

Great Intro...Always puts a smile on my face to know that the forums have proven to be very useful to people! :D

Although I don't own a CX-9 or CX-7, I'm a huge fan of what Mazda has done in that "space"...There is no doubt that Mazda is winning more and more new customers over with its fantastic SUV/CUV lineup...Please, enjoy the forums!

From a distance, the CX9 looks more like a tall wagon but once you get close to it, the size and shape become more appealing as a crossover-type vehicle.

I think this is one reason why people dont see it as an SUV. The shape isn't upright, but rather sporty. It's what made me sell the Pilot and get the 2010 GTAWD.

Only the Lambdas have more room. The Mercedes GL has less, like all other crossovers.
In fact, the Mercedes GL has 17 cubic feet less than the CX9 with both rows folded. That's a larger difference than between the CX9 and Ford Expedition. The GL weighs 1000lbs more, and even though it has a premium burning 5.5 liter 382HP V8, it's less than 1 second faster then a CX9 0-60. It also gets a lot worse mileage (13/17). All for a starting price of $82,850. You can buy two fully loaded CX9 GTs for less, and the CX9 actually seats 7 adults, not just has 7 seats.

Why do the luxury brands need thirsty V8s to get into the upper 300HP range, when Ford can do it with a 3.5 V6, AND get a lot better mileage?

'Luxury' cars simply aren't worth it any more. You used to get a better quality car with more useful features, but any more most cars are built very well, and have many of the same features (sometimes more). We are seeing a lot more gimmicks on them to try to justify the excess cost. 'Free' maintenance, of course, isn't free. You simply pay for it up front.
The only real appeal any more is the tired status symbol that snobs with more money than sense need to have to feel superior.
Personally, I laugh every time I see one of them driving around all smug, because I know their fragile ego overcame their common sense, and they paid too much for less car. Dumb.

If I won the Powerball tomorrow I'd still buy a CX9 Touring AWD, just like we are planning to trade up to anyway.

"End of 'Luxury' Car Rant"

I agree that the CX-9 is a great value, and has good content, but I won't get another when my lease expires. In my next CUV I want ventilated seats, memory seats that tie in with mirrors/HVAC/Audio, front/back parking sensors, and retained accessory power, just to name a few. I will have to step up to a luxury brand to get these.

And I do really like my CX-9, so no bashing from me.

CX9 is very under-advertised.

Agree. I am another shopper who just stumbled upon the CX-9 after reading a thread in a MDX forum comparing the two. I've been driving a Mercedes ML320 for the past ten years and was considering another ML Bluetec or the MDX Tech when I found out about the CX-9 GT AWD. I've also driven a Veracruz which did not pass muster IMO and was a poor fourth. I really liked the Genesis and feel Hyundai could clearly have a winner on it's hands if they brought the Veracruz up to Genesis standards though.

My quickie comparison:

Best looking: ML
Worst looking MDX
CX-9 is handsome and far better looking than the MDX just not quite as unique as the ML

Engines: Well, I'd love to have the diesel bluetec but it's never going to pay for itself given a near $20K upcharge over the CX-9. The Acura engine is sweet and gets better MPG than the CX but the CX engine looks to be more than adequate.

Transmissions: All about the same. MB has an extra gear but both MDX and CX were fine.

Interiors: The ML is typical teutonic. I'm used to it and like the spartan uncluttered look and feel. I also have never had a more comfortable driver seat than in my 99 ML. The Acura has the most luxurious and well fitted interior and sitting in the driver's seat feels like being in a cockpit. Seat is borderline too cushy but still very nice. CX-9 has a very comfortable seat that reminds me of the ML. Seating position is up high kinda like the ML or a minivan compared to the MDX. Overall I like all three interiors with the CX9 obviously showing some of it's economy cuts here but in a way that is evident only with direct comparison to the other two.

Space. CX wins hands down for total cargo space. Benz is next and MDX last though all three have pretty good cargo. I would like but don't absolutely need the third seat so am not downgrading the Benz on that point.

Electronics/Nav: MDX is best. ML perhaps second. CX9 again is pretty close to the ML and lacks only the hard drive nav system with built in MP3 storage. I wish the CX had the SD card slot the ML does as that is my preferred transfer medium. CDs are kinda old and a hassle in comparison to data cards. I like the BSM system on the CX which is not even available on the ML and only as part of the $50K plus Advance package on the MDX. Of all the bells and whistles other than nav/rear camera/BT I think BSM is the most useful.

Driving experience: I liked them all and could be happy with any of them. ML is perhaps my favorite. MDX is the sportiest and probably does out perform the other two but not by a huge amount and for normal driving that is not an issue. I enjoyed my drive in the CX which is pretty similar to the ML overall on the road.

Towing: Here is where the CX falls down. I don't understand a 3500lb towing limit on a biggish SUV and especially don't like the Class 2 hitch as all my bike racks and rear cargo carriers are class 3 2x2. Still, as i don't actually tow more than 3500lbs regularly and can just install an aftermarket Class 3 hitch this deficiency can be partially worked around. ML is towing champ with 7000lb capacity (and it is also unibody). MDX has expected 5000lb tow capacity that the CX should also have.

Value: No contest. CX9 blows the other two away. Best price on a CX9 right now seems to be about 10-11% off MSRP which is maybe $500-750 less than invoice. $36K fully loaded. 7yr/100K warranty from Mazda/Ford is about $2200. Mercedes is at the bottom in terms of value. ML not only costs about $53K as diesel or maybe $50K as gas version but the maintenance expenses are just atrocious. $500 for essentially an oil change and inspection every 10K plus poor reliability historically so extended warranty is almost mandatory if you intend to keep the car. 7yr/100K warranty from MB costs about $4500 (how's that for a statement on their own assessment of reliability and maintenance costs?). Acura MDX is not as good a value as the CX but is still far better than the MB. Best price I got on an MDX was $500 over invoice or close to $45K for the Tech with rack and tow package. Acura extended warranty is about $2200 for 8yr/120K miles. MDX is very reliable but Acura service is almost like Mercedes in cost.

Standard Warranty: Not too big an issue for me as I will probably get an extended warranty with any of them. Mazda has the shortest at three years. Acura and MB are both 4 years.

Resale: Acura best in terms of percentage of MSRP. MB and CX close with MB having a slight edge in early years. This would push me to the MDX if I thought I would sell in three years but as I usually keep cars 7-10 yrs that is not so much of a factor.

My choice still has to be made but I've essentially ruled out the ML as a poor value even though with the bluetec it is my favorite vehicle as far as feeling good about driving a big honking SUV with regard to impact on the planet is concerned. If Mercedes had a $10K loyalty rebate I would probably buy one anyway.

MDX is very very nice and if it cost the same as the CX9 or even just about three or four grand more I'd probably spring for it despite the butt ugly front end.

I'm leaning towards the CX as the clear value leader with no substantial negatives and performance I would be perfectly happy with (except MPG). Zero percent for 60m is kinda sweet too cutting off another grand or more on other manufacturer's total finance costs. Trying to decide about nav vs no nav and then if I can get the price I want I'll do the deal.

One other thing I have noticed at least in the Boston area is that the Mazda dealers are all pretty small compared to Acura and MB. I've found a nice family run Mazda dealership about 20 miles away that I would be happy to work with. The closest Mazda shop to me is a pretty old school sleazeball kinda dealer which surprised me in this era.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. We've had the CX9 for just over a week and thus far have been absolutely thrilled with the decision.
