I have a question....I dont want anyone to think that I am stealing the thread....But when I go WOT with my car...its feels as if I am not getting spool up. What could be causeing this. I would say I get this feeling about 75% of the time. They say the intake system is causing this???

My parents used to own a 1987 Supra turbo and then traded in on a 1991 MR2 turbo and then a 1993 Stealth Twin turbo. I think that each of those cars were "fast". The MSP is a great handling car (only the MR2 compares in my opinion) and it's quick enough to get around pokey drivers. But I wouldnt call it a "fast" car. Maybe put that spool turbo upgrade on it , then she'll be "fast".
The new motor seems too mild mannered unlike the original motor that was in it!It was a beast before!Now it's like leprachan needs me wishin' it was fast(or Quick)again!I dunno maybe it just needs to break in ?My last motor didn't though?

The new VR6, turbo S bug, and Golf 337 1.8t are all 6 speed.

The whole break in thing is going to be a debate for a long time. I didn't really get on my car until about 800 miles just because I figured what the hell. Had to drive to Milwaukee and back a few times, so it was only for a week.
A lot of people say you should drive the car how you plan on driving it for its life from the get go. Who knows? Who cares. Do what you want.

no fool j/k its like on our price tag it says 5 speed w/overdrive trans. that trans goin to overdrive when we get in 5th gear
The wild thing is that the stock VW's don't even NEED a 6-speed - that trans just really throws another cog in between 1 and 5, shifting the others around so you have some even soacing in there. The "final drive" isn't all that much different than the stock 5-speed, a little higher (lower numerically) but not even near a full gear. Usually you'd do this with a peaky race engine with a narrow powerband, but VW's VR6 and *especially* the 1.8T are very broad-tortque-band engines - they don't NEED a close ratio box, it just feels better to drive. It's actually slower (more time spent shifting), but more fun.
Oh - it doesn't hurt to break in an engine fairly gradually, especiallya boosted one. Helps "seat the rings" - get the mechanical parts to know each other better before stressing them. Machines last longer that way. I'm not talking short shifting at 2 grand or anything, but taking it easy for a few hundred miles certainly won't hurt! It's TOUGH TO DO though - trying to stay out of the boost for 600 miles was tough, but I did it. Now it's 1200 and time for the first oil change!

The 6-speeds became available in 2002 when VW released the 24valve, 201hp VR6. Previous VR6's were 12Valve 172hp (?). They later put that tranny in the GTI 337 (1.8T) Beetle Turbo S (1.8T), and I believe the Jetta GLI (VR6).
I thought I had read somewhere a long time ago that having more gears isn't necessarily better with a turbo'd car because it makes you come out of boost for a moment. A slightly higher gearing that keeps you in boost longer is more ideal.

uuuuhhhhhhhh,.........no, it's not really that fast at all. If you think a high 14second 1/4 mile is fast, then yes it is. But if you have driven other fast cars, then the MSP is god awfull slow. It handles great if it handles as good as the MP3 though. Maybe you should have named this thread, "This car handles great!". But the MSP is only fast compared to a Zamboni on ice. Not being mean here, just speaking the truth.
What a heat dog! It hit mid-90's here today and I could tell... big time bog in acceleration. That damn little scoop fell off my air intake box, so it is even getting more of that hot radiator fan air...
I thought my old VW GLI had the worst designed air intake system ever, but I am not so sure anymore... what were they thinking putting the intake right next to the turbulent flow of the radiator cooling fan? This CAI can't come fast enough for me. I am still happy with the MSP but need to get this resolved eventually to feel truely satisfied with the vehicle, it just doesn;t seem complete yet. I honestly believe this is the cause of the "dead zone" in the power band. The car is sweet when it is ice cold.
On a side note, on the way home from the movies tonight, at the light in dual lanes, I pulled up next to the po po... when the light turned green and we were taking off the po po gets on his P.A. It makes it's beep and he says "nice light show" I guess he was talking about my A/F gauge on the post pod, cause I wasn't into the gas heavy yet so it was all flashing through the spectrum. Then he hammers down, obviously breaking the 45 speed limit. I just thought it was a little strange to get teased by the police, then he races off like we were going to try and keep up with him. I kind of like my license and cheap insurance, thx statie!

Just to let y'all know... I smoked the s*** out of a new Camaro SS
with my MSP. I think that maybe the people that think the MSP is a slow car should learn how to drive a little more agressively, and learn the right way to shift. I have been driving for 17 yrs. and have driven many cars including an original DeTomaso Pantera.
The Mazdaspeed is a fine example of a Sport Compact, and yes it may have its limitations as a factory vehicle, but wait a year and see what is available for mods, if you're not happy with a Factory Built Hot Rod. ROCK ON !!!

If you smoked an SS then he wasn't trying (or he's an absolutely bad driver and shouldn't be behind the wheel of a sports car). I used to drive a 1996 Z28 prior to getting my MSP and it was a lot faster. Drivers being equal, a Z28 or SS would blow the MSP away. However if speed were at the top of my list I would have kept my Camaro. As many other people have pointed out, the MSP has several other great features. To me it was just a really nice all-round car, and although I wouldn't quite call it fast, it is definitely more than decent in terms of quickness.
