Would you trade in the Spec........

Only the 2002s had tranny/engine problems.

Most were fixed for 2003.

The only problem that still remains in the 2003s is the paint. But Some Meguires Gold Class Wax does it good.

The only problems I've had with paint was when some dude sideswiped me, and the most he did was peel off some of the wax, and give me 2 minor scratches and 3 paint chips.

I have no problems with my spec. But I wouldn't drive a 2002, just too many problems.

Thanks everyone for the advice and comments about the Spec. A couple reasons why I was even looking around at other cars....

1. I hate the '02 tranny. Shifts are hard as hell. My 89 Nissan PU had smoother shifts than this.

2. The paint sucks.

3. Startup problems.

Can't think of too much more than that. I love the torque on this car and I'm sure as soon as the Jim Wolf stuff comes out, this car can be made into a real beast! I really wasn't looking, but saw the Mazdaspeed and loved the looks of it. Also helped that it came with a turbo. I'll have to think about it some more. If money wasn't an object, I would just wait for the STi and live a happy life..........

I had the same probs with my Spec V, I couldn't stand it, I got fed up and got a deal on a MSP and said bye bye spec V.

I think the MSP is a far superior car despite some tuning issues.

If you don't mind me asking....how much did you pay for your MSP? Did you trade in your Spec or sell it privately? Thanks for your help!

19800 for the MSP, traded in the Spec V and took a hit, but the market went to s*** so I got out of it in time to taking a bigger hit.

Just keep it...
demodding a car and sellin the parts are a pain in the arse.. but that's b/c I had many problems with my 99 max.. oh I was going to be V2 Stillen Supercharged, and I ended up sellin the car :(

Monday morning (04/07/03) I owned a white 2002 spec V. Great car, no problems what-so-ever. Monday evening, I owned a black MS Protege. You have a very, very nice looking spec. I had only done intake and exhaust to mine so it was an easy decision for me to get rid of it. I only got to drive the MSP for about 20 miles, but I like it so much better. I think you would be happy with the trade.

Allen-

Welcome aboard, Allen.

....5,000 miles, and the Grin hurts, but I have gotten used to it.

The fact that these cars are so limited makes them real special. If you don't mind the loss, trade it in. If your tight on cash, be economical, you got a sweet ride already. keep it.

1. Yeah that would be great if they didnt drop out of the powerband when you shift into second

2. WTF r u talking about? I would say the creature comforts of the MSP r quiet nice. Badass interior, Full 450W kenwood mp3/cd player and system. Handles like a beast for stock, and after I boosted up its pretty damn quick (faster than a Rex (wrx))

you beat a wrx in your mazdaspeed at 9 psi , who was drining the wrx some grandma....... i hope it was stock also ....the wrx has alot more potential than a mazda speed .... why dont your turn your boost over ten psi and see what happens .....say bye bye to msp........ i cant wait til the 24 when my new wrx will be here and the p5 will be gone ......... i was going to get an msp until my friend went boost happy........

WOW!!!
So did I!!!
Strange isnt it that all these former specV owners are trying to get into MSPs ;)

Actually, I like the specV very much...but the MSP is just much more fun to drive, my specV was faster...but the MSP is not far off, and I dont have to use laughing gas to get low 14s...
TO be fair thats all I had in the Spec (55shot), then my friend bought it from me modded it (runs 13's now), and I got my MSP.
The rest is how they say? History. :)

Damn.......decisions, decisions. I'll see if I can get the dealer to swap my tranny for the 03 tranny. I think that improvement alone would make me wanna keep my ride. Thanks for all your help. I really do like the look and potential of the MS. I think down the line, a lot more mods will be available for it and you will see some crazy fast ones on the street and track. Thanks again!

Would you trade in the spec...

Depends. Do you like the smooth linear power of the 2.5 in the Spec or do you like the jerky, surging feeling the hack job ECU tuning in the Mazdaspeed gives you? :D

Ofcoarse you could suplement the MSPs ecu jerkyness with the Nissans TRANSMISSIONS jerkiness.

The only time I experience this jerky, hiccupping is sometimes while accelerating in 2nd gear. Other than that, it is non-existent.

Yeah,

Nissan has had some problems w/ that 6 spd.. syncros and grinding gears OH MY!

More then that, I have a few friends that are on there 3rd transmissions. That car is junk, period. I'll take a rich running PCM for safety against a combustable tranny any day.

My husband has a Spec V and in my humble opinion my new car blows his car out of the water! Heck, he kinda feels that way too! He likes his Spec V, but there are some things that he kinda wishes were better. I.E. the turning radius for the Spec V sucks!!!!!!!!!!
I just traded in my 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5 R.S. I loved (and still do) that car! He was my man! My wonderful man at that! I would have kept him except I needed a 4-door car (have a 7 month old daughter and hit her head on the roof when I tried to put her in my old car; that was the deciding factor for me!).
If you love your Spec V, then you should stick with it. If you are just somewhat happy with it, then go for the Mazdaspeed! My husband just lucked out that he gets the best of both worlds!

I knew I could put some activity in here.... ;)

And it was the 2002 Spec that had all the issues. Same with the 2003 MSP I hope. I might get one if they get the tuning right on the next gen or someone has a definate fix for the driveability.
