working in oz

so 2 of my female friends and my girlfriend, all of which have graduated uni, are looking to put off getting real jobs for a few more months and going to australia from october to january, then flying ot india for a wedding, to dubai to visit family, and to london for a few days on the way home, but probably 3 months will be spent in sydney. while there they'll have some kind of visa that allows them to work, i forget what it's called though. they're looking at going to sydney (i voted melbourne because it's way better but they didn't agree). so a few questions
1) does anybody know any good/cheap neighborhoods around sydney? they found an apartment on craigslist.org for a furnished apartment near bondi beach for like $570aus a month which seems rediculously cheap to me. anyone have other suggestions?
2) where do you think it would be easy to get a job for 3 months?
3) any other comments/suggestions?

also, i'll hopefully be visiting in december/january depending on if i have the money and if i can get the time off. when i visit i damn well better be going scuba diving, otherwise i might not go :)

hahahaha.....bondi is an expensive burb, but $570pm is cheap. rent is cheap here compared to other places in the world. we usually have weekly rent rates. i dont know the sydney rates at the moment, but $200 per week in brisbane gets you a good place 15 minutes from the CBD

try searching on www.realestate.com.au - that's the one to go through. it's australia's biggest online real estate website for sales and rentals. i've never heard of craigslist.org

3 month job - prob heaps in the hospitality industry, but i guess it all depends on their experience

thanks, i'll pass on the link. i went back and looked at the one on craigslist and it didn't say if it was a month or a week so it's probably per week, she'll be disappointed :) i dont think they're totally set on sydney yet so i'll let them know that brisbane is relatively cheap too. and 800/month aussie here is about half of what i'd pay for a crappy 1 bedroom around here, wish i lived over there :)

as far as experience, 2 of them i know have waitressing/bartending experience, but they're probably willing to try anything. it's 2 history majors and 1 political science major, so nothing really applicable to a job like that

bondi - expensive....

on most of the real estate sites they are divided by area.... look at south or west sydney.... otherwise check out canberra, or newcastle....

bondi = expensive.
You can try the harbors. I think there are lots of restaurants around and they can be servers.
There's also Manley, which ain't bad.
Most of the prices for rent, when i was there, were per week. Keep that in mind.

i remember going to manley cause the ferry goes right by the opera house so you only have to pay like $5 or whatever to see it instead of going on a tourist boat :) i'll tell them to check it out

i checked out the real estate site up above, it looks like 300/week aussie for an apartment, so let's say 1000/month american, not bad, and im sure they could find somewhere cheaper if they look. i still say melbourne, i know that area and the suburbs way better :)

the prices sound about right...

just keep in mind they are harbours, and manly has no e :P

get that ok, and you will find stacks of places

If you are looking around the Manly or Northern Beaches area, anywhere between $250-$320 per week is your best bet. This will get you a nice two bedroom apartment close to the water and transportation. Currently I am paying $220 but that was a lucky find and the apartment is "older", but it is comfortable and we have been here 2 years, which is pretty good for me.

They may have trouble finding somewhere for a 3 month lease though, as most places either like 6 or 12 month leases.
