Well, I can't believe I actually exceeded the estimated MPG that Mazda has for the MP3. 31.7MPG on 89 octane that tank.

I'm definitely not driving it hard enough.

was that just one one fill? i found that to be misleading. every pump and pump cutoff is slightly different for whatever reasons. there's a chance that the gas you "filled up" on wasn't as full as the previous fill up, giving you the impression that you had better gas mileage. unless you average out the mpg over a few fill-up's, you really can't say that 89 octane got you better gas mileage. sorry to be the A$$ to say that.

MP3s don't "require" premium. They run best and have the best performance with premium, but you can run the cheaper stuff.

That is the avg from one tank of gas. It doesn't really matter how the pump cuts off because the difference is probably ounces of gas. I took the number of miles I went and just divided by the number of gallons I put in. It may not be exact, but it certainly is close I imagine, .

I have done it actually topping off the tank, and have averaged 32mph all highway before... and I didn't exaclty baby it. so its very possible.

BUT, that being said, it is much more acurate to do it over 2-3 (or more) tanks of gas. it will give a truer number

yeah... but also, I wouldn't run under 89 octane. this is because the ECU uses the stock knock sensor to retard timing because of the inaudible knock our cars will get from low octane gas. even though it will run on 87, dont do it. the stock knock sensor sucks.

have done it one time and I heard it myself. and I only run 89 o very long road trips (all highway) where I baby it anyways.

I run mid grade during the work week and I throw in a tank of premium every once in a while. I can't imagine that Mazda whould say that you can run any octane if it wasn't ok. It would have been too easy for them to just say "run Premium Only" but they didn't. If you say the knock sensor sucks then it probably does, I'm sure you know some things about the car that I don't since I have only had it for 2.5months.

It does run better with the higher grade fuel though.

i drove to NJ awhile ago and got 500 miles to a tank thats over 35mpg! i was amazed. that was on 87 as well

I think i'm one of the few people who has gotten over 37mpg. it'd be nice if i got that every time i drove on the highway.....but then again i wish i were a millionaire too.
