2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
Hello all, i have been having trouble with my car for awhile. It started out with poor idling. Would die sometimes when i would pull to a stop. Now when i take my foot off the gas it dies every time. It starts right away and then dies. I suspected the fuel pressure regulator and i replaced it and no luck. I pulled the codes and i was getting a lean code and a missfire code. I changed the plugs, wires and coil packs. It still dies on me.

Was wondering if anyone has had this problem before and what you did to fix it. Hope you can help.

Jeff

Are the plugs gapped correctly? Honestly sounds like bad coils or wires but if you replaced them and know the new ones are good it sounds like a bad MAF or EGR. Maybe a dirty IAC?

Thanks for the reply, I talked to my UTI instructors and they also said to check IAC or EGR. By the way i noticed that you have a Bullitt. I do as well 2009 #5904. What do you think about it?

That's cool! They are close in production numbers, are you on IMBOC? My dad is Lambo on there, I don't have an SN. I absolutely love the Bullitt, it's Highland Green. It's mostly stock, removed the stock intake resonator things, rear control arms, MGW shifter, Brenspeed tune, Edelbrock headers, Koni ST shocks and struts. Just ordered a bunch of suspension parts for it, steeda lowering springs, rear panhard bar, steeda swaybars and endlinks, braided brake lines, Hawk brake pads and slotted rotors, I cant wait to get them on. Then new tires and out to TWS to run it on the track.
Have you been to any of the Bullitt Mach 1 shootouts out in Lufkin? My dad and I have gone the past 2 years and they are a blast. Best run last year was a 13.32 @104 if IIRC.

No i havent gone to the shootouts but it sounds like alot of fun. I have to be honest though the mustang is my brothers, he is in afghanistan and im baby sitting it for him. He has a bunch of plans for it i think. Im driving it until i get my car fixed. then its going under the covers in the garage. Sounds like you know alot about this stuff. I just started going to UTI the end of may this year, taking automotive and diesel courses. I think my brother belongs to IMBOC.

That's cool, enjoy it I love driving the Bullitt so much. I wish it handled like the MSP but with the parts I just ordered and new tires i'm sure it will.

Yeah thats the next thing im gonna look at. I took the iac off and the valve was stuck, put it back on and it finally stayed running. Im gonna go ahead and clean both the iac and egr hopefully that will fix it for awhile.

Dang, sorry i havent been on in awhile, i have 112000 miles on it. Still not fixed

Finally 3 months later, replaced the egr valve. Still no change, im getting p0300 and p0660. Lovely random cylinder misfire and vics solenoid bad basically. I need a new one and a new vtcs. No resistance on the vics and 45 ohms on the vtcs, should be 22-26. Oh also tried to get my car inspected, fail, my catalyst, oxygen sensor and egr test are not ready. Im thinking have these codes pending is whats keeping them from running the tests. Not sure. My instructor wants me to fix the P0660 first then go on.

The P0300 misfire code is most definitely the most important here, what plugs are in the car now? The OEM plugs are NGK ZFR6F-11, gap them to .028-.032" (they will be .044" out of the box). Did you replace the actual boots on the bottom of the coilpack? All the wires are properly seated on the plugs?

It's possible if the VICS is stuck open it could cause issues like this, but I am not certain. Swap the solenoids for the VICS/VTCS, they are the same except for a paint dot on top. Be careful with the vacuum lines the solenoids have plastic vacuum nipples that are easy to snap off.

Wastegate is shot. Go to atpturbo.com to pick up a cheap one that will work with the t25
