Won't Start. Dashboard lights up but not seeing fob (2016 CX-5)

I have a Mazda cx 5 2016 touring. I already changed the car battery and the fob battery. When I go to start the car the brake doesn't go down all the way but the dashboard lights up like I'm not pressing the brake. I don't see on the dash the green icon for the key (which would be red if I was missing the fob). If I hold the fob to the start button it doesn't light up at all. So it recognizes the key enough to start the dash but not enough to start the car?? I tried to see what would happen if I didn't have the fob at all and the dash doesn't light up and I get the red icon telling me there's no key. I just changed the battery so I don't know if that's a cause? Also, some times it will start if I keep trying. What made me change the battery was that I was getting a bunch of warning lights on my dash, traction, engine and low pressure. Then sometimes the triangle with the exclamation point. Thought that would fix that but it didn't. The car wouldn't start before I changed the battery so that's why I thought it might be the battery. So I don't know if I have 2 things going on or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you try the other fob to see if it works the same way or not?

The brake pedal not 'going down all the way' or being hard to press is normal when the vacuum is lost for the brake assist. No worries there as it should go back to normal after the car gets started. It's not preventing the car from starting at least, that's another issue.

Did you check for codes?

I did try another fob. Replaced the battery in that as well and I get the same thing.

Assuming the brake switch isn't completely knackered, try applying and releasing the brake pedal numerous times. That has temporarily fixed a sticking brake switch. On other cars with that problem I've sprayed electronic contact cleaner around /in the small shaft (on the switch) that is actuated by the brake pedal. Following that was a careful application of a spray lube. The switch isn't visible without looking up under the dash toward the top of the brake pedal. Might be worth a try.

My cx 5 is currently at the dealership because I had a left rear brake light replaced and my car would not come out of park. The brake would not depress all the way. Car would not start…Smart brake system malfunction warning, I am being told that it is the harness. Any suggestions?

The dealer replaced the light? The entire assembly or just the bulb?

In either case, something else must have been done to screw up the shift interlock, or whatever has been screwed up.

Did the dealer do the work and when you picked the car up it wouldn't come out of park? But you were able to start it? If you can start it that indicates that the car 'knows' that the brake pedal is being depressed.

A hard to press brake pedal is not necessarily indicative of a bad wiring harness.

You're going to have to provide more detail here, a lot more.

Just the brake light was replaced but not by the dealer, I went to Valvoline and they replaced it. Had to be towed to dealer from there. The Smart brake system malfunction warning appeared and I could not start car, could not shift it out of park, brake pedal very hard to depress and car did not detect key fob. I am told by dealer that the harness is probably ruined

Valvoline (is that an auto parts store?) replaced a single bulb and after they did the work the car wouldn't start? What did they have to say about this?

Sounds more like a battery issue to me. Anyone test that? Did Valvoline mess around under the hood at all?

Valvoline is an oil change place, No nothing under the hood and battery is 3 months old. Valvoline hasn’t said much so far. Smart brake system malfunction warning came on after brake light was replaced.

Nothing under the hood and they only accessed the brake light, right?

About the only thing that they could have screwed up was possibly shorting the brake light connector out. And unless someone stepped on the brake pedal while the short was present, or the connector was powered up for some other reason, that seems like the only thing that could have been screwed up. To me anyways.

They told me to leave engine on so I did and after they replaced the bulb I tried to shift to Drive and could not shift from Park and then turned engine off. Then could not start, etc.

Sounds like it could be the "room fuse" (and is labeled as such in the fuse box lid) is blown from shorting out when changing the bulb. Mine blew when changing an interior bulb and caused no start among other things. IIRC it's #54 (top left hand corner in the fuse box in front of the battery). I'd look there. Might be an easy fix.

Thanks I’ll ask the dealer’s technician to check that tomorrow

Well, there you go. There's NO reason to have the car on, the motor or the ignition, while replacing lights/LEDs and every reason to have the car turned off.

I'm sorry but they don't know what they are doing at that shop.

If you told the technician that the light was changed out while the car was on, he'll know RIGHT away what the problem is. At least he should...

I am calling the dealership this morning to give them the fuse suggestion and I did tell them the car was running. Thanks for your help.
