ok so i raced a cobalt tonite...first race i slammed 3rd and it wouldent go into gear i was reving in neutral. Im not a newb i know how to shift and been in many races this was crazy. 2nd time was fine and then 3rd the same thing happened it wouldent let me go into 3rd...so i pulled over after the race and now my shifter wouldent go into netural i was trying to push down on it i finally got it and then it got stuck and now i have to pull it up to shift into first and push it down mad hard to go into reverse...its a stock shifter with twm bushings...last thing i wanna do is bring in to mazda...can anyone help??

p.s i heard of shifters getting stuck in the winter in reverse but it was 55 out

Some people have actually broken their shifters slamming them into gear, might be something to look into. Take off the shift boot and look around or its easy enough to take that whole tunnel out.

Next I would look under the hood, under the intake you will see the shift cables, see if any of them look out of shape.

"Pulled over" as in limped back to the pits,... I Hope

well this is what happened to me when i broke my shifter.

bought the car then maybe 2-3 weeks later the push-down gets stuck and i have to pull up and down to make it work right. drive like taht for a while.

raced a lot.

one night, i went to the track. first run went fine. but launched conservatively. then 2nd run i launched hard, shifter went SUPER loose off the line. then at the end of the track i shifted into the last gear. SNAP. shifter broke. the shift knob was laying by the cigarette lighter.

if anything, bring to mazda. they will replace it for free. well at least thats what happened to me. but i uninstalled my intake and EBC before going in.

If the shifter turns out to be OK and not broken, shift forks for other makes have been known to bend or break, making it difficult to get into some gears. Stainless or billet aluminum shift forks for the tranny usually solve it. But, run a search first to see if "shift fork" comes up with anything. MS3 I don't think has that problem for hard drivers.... that I know of....

ok pulled over as in "**** 3rd gear didnt work he beat me im pulling over to the side of the road now" and yea at a track :p lmao

ok i took everything apart and the plastic piece by the spring was completely destroyed...as for going into 3rd...it goes it daily driving perfect but sometimes its really hard to go into im gonna get some ford motorsport synth trans oil and put it in...see if that helps if not idk but i just ordered twn short shifter

Theres no need to abuse the crap out of the car when racing..its not going to make it go any faster! driving it smooth, consistent and learning the best shift points is the key.
