Wind Noise

After 2 months into the 5, the only problem I got so far is the wind noise.
I find out that the wind noise on highway is way much worst than my other rides, eg : Altima, Maxima, Accord, CRX etc...
I usually goind for around 110km/h to 130km/h on highways, and of couse the wind noise get worst the faster you drive (note : all windows/moonroof are closed). I kinda feel that the wind noise is mainly from the moonroof area. Will moonroof visor help cut down wind noise, or it will get even worst? (ughdance)

Gemino, just for comparison, come on over and and let's try gunning my 5 to 130 km/h on the highway. See if you can compare windnoise on my 5 vs yours. May not be a direct comparison though since I have a mooroof wind deflector on mine. Still worth a shot IMO, then maybe you can decide to take your 5 back to your dealer to have the excessive wind noise addressed. You have my number!

If you're a DIY type guy, get some dynamat type dampening material and lay down some layers throughout the car. I have my doors and rear area mostly done and it's made a huge difference. Doing the roof should make it very quiet.

Kid Red, I'd LOVE to see some picts of how you got all the pieces off and where you were able to put in the Dynamat. I'd love it even more if you decide to try to get the headliner off to put some up there if you'd take some picts of that too!

Ok, if/when I do the roof, I'll try and take pics. I did the front doors from above the speaker well to the bottom before the panel attaches. THe rear tire spare area I did everything that is exposed if you lift out the tray and remove the tire. The gate, once I get the panel off, I will see how much can be done. I'd like to do the 2nd row doors as well, though those will be more difficult as I'd have to do it from inside the car.

I think the front doors and roof would do the best job for the least amount of work.

Wind noise? Our 5 is one of the quietist cars we've ever had. Definiately do a comparison with someone else, because the noise you describe shouldn't be there.

I've been complaining about wind noise on my wife's 5 since we bought it.
Try this.
Remove both wiper arms and try it. You'll be amazed by the silence.
very poor disign of the wiper arm rest area.

For me, it's the top rear of the front doors. There is a gap between the front door seal and the rear door seal. Plus, the second door seal does not extend all the way up to the top edge of the door, there is a inch or so gap. I want to get some felt tape or something to put on the jam to see if that cuts out the noise. I can hear the wooosshhhhhh by my ear everything I drive over 50 and it's quite annoying.

Hey KidRed

Just speed tape the outside of car door to see if it is that door or not. Sounds like your heading down the right road on locating your noise......

The gate, once I get the panel off, I will see how much can be done

I've had the main panel off the inside of the back gate while running some wire for my backup camera, it's really easy to get off. There is a little white pillow like thing attached to it already that actually makes a big difference in the noise (try driving it around with the panel off :D ) but you could definitely add quite a bit of extra stuff in there. I dont know about the weight of it though, have to be careful not to make the door slam back down.

Getting the rest of the plastics off the door looked like a very big job, I didn't think I could do it without removing the entire door as they appear to be under the bolts that hold the hinges on. But I didn't explore much beyond that.

Well I can tell ya I have seen behind both sliding doors and front door panels and fyi most tabs don't like being removed and re-installed (specially the panel on the slideing door with the window switch

Sliding doors- how did they look? Shouldn't be much there in the way of a plastic covering like on the front doors?

How did you get the panel off? Sitting inside the car?

What's speed tape?

I got my car with the optional sunroof wind guard. I wasnt drooling over the looks with it on so i removed it. On my way to work the next day doing 80MPH i noticed it was pretty loud without it, especially with the sunroof open. If you dont have the wind deflector you might want to get your hands on one. I put mine back on and am grateful for it.
Hope this helps

Speed tape is used on Airplanes on the leading edge of all antennas. So this stuff is great for putting on your car to seal a crack or a door opening in this case.... now if I can tape on some wings you can fly(ughdance)

I see thanks.

As for the sunroof guard, I've heard that doesn't do well with the roof rack installed? (throws the wind right at the first rack or something...)

I'd have the dealer look at it. Sounds like your moonroof isn't sealing properly. If air is getting in, rain might too... Not good. I've got the moonroof. and I can't detect any noise coming from it when closed. Open on the highway is loud. but closed it's quiet. I can't see how the sunroof deflector can make thing quieter. I'd think ( based on the design) that they would increase the noise level slightly.
