Will Synthetic oil ruin my turbo?

Yeah agreed. I change my oil every 1500-2000 miles. use Castrol Syntec Blend 5w-30
I have used Pennzoil Platinum, but prefer Quaker State QHorsepower 5w30. I change my oil every 2500-3000 miles. If you plan on extending your drain intervals past 5k, then the Royal Purple, Amsoil thing might be the way to go, I stated my case on the Mobil 1 thing, just because they were 1st, does not make them the best...............

Back to the fuel in the oil thing. I may have stumbled upon a likely cause.

I happened to notice that one of my coil packs wasnt firing all the time, or firing intermitently. I found this out by using a timing light inductive pick up on the wire. This did not trigger a MIL, the car runs fine, plenty of power, etc... I woudl have never known if i didnt stumble across it.

my quess is that a cylinder or two not firing every time woudl cause soem fuel in the oil. Check your coil packs!

It has always been my belief that running synthetics in a turbo is better than normal oil because it prevents carbon build-up, is this assumption incorrect?

Well, there is that. But mostly it adds to your number of times getting laid per month.

See it works like this. Turbos make your car cooler, because it goes faster. What is it that every chick yells in bed? If you guessed "faster faster"' you guessed right. Some also yell stuff like, "get off me", "who are you?", and "The restraining order said 500 yards!". But that has nothing to do with cars.
So clearly the babes like it faster. If you look at the label on some synthetics, like Mobil 1 you will notice there is an ass/week rating on the back. This is a mathematical coefficient used to calculate how much extra ass you will attract by using their oil. It has to do with the fact that the oil helps the turbo spin faster, therefore making the car faster. Infact if the a girl isn't impressed with your car enough to sleep with you, M1 claims it will make your car so fast she will black out from the G forces when you punch the gas, leaving you with an opportunity to make your move. They do recommend consulting a lawyer about your local laws before trying this. I think they mean laws about speeding.. but I could be wrong.
The equation is simple.

(Number of Turbos) X (ass coefficient) = Lays per week. If you drive a riced out honda civic with a giant spoiler, divide by the total number of dollars you spent on the car plus the height of your spoiler in millimeters.

So while it does help with the carbon, its mostly used to get more tale!

And yes this can all be proven scientifically. I know because someone told me it could, plus I read it on the internet!

I thought it was cheaper than Mobil1. I'm planning to switch to PP next oil change. I used to use Royal Purple way back and it's like almost $9/quart I think!

Wally World has a 5-qt. jug o' Penn Plat 5W-30 for $19. Add another quart at $5. A filter and crush washer are another $5. On top of that, you can't put a price on knowing it was done right.

Dealers keep telling me that synthetic oil will ruin my turbo. Apparently mazda used to not recomend synthetic, but now they have ok-ed it. What gives?

All the research I have done says use synthetic. The theory behind how it works is a no brainer in my book. I am unclear as to how it could hurt a turbo.

Anyhow it is driving me nuts. My car is gettin its first oil change tomorrow. Will be about 3150 miles, 08.5 MS3 GT.

Damnit I hate dealers!

Anyone know the effect on the turbo?

I would stop listening to the dealer after he tries to tell me synthetic ruins turbos. I wouldn't run synthetic until you get closer to 10,000 miles, but that doesn't have anything to do with turbos. I have 44,000 miles on my speed3, I burn no oil, I have no smoke in the exhaust, and I have no turbo issues. All I did was use non synthetic for the first 10,000 miles, than switched to 5w30 fully synthetic for the next 30,000 miles, I than switched to 10w30 fully synthetic. You wont have any issues doing it that way.

dude, every 1500-2000 miles??? Are you taking it to the track every weekend or something?? Our cars are 2.3L in size, but hold 6 qt's of oil, you shouldn't have to change your oil any less than every 5000 miles. Just to give you an example, my last car had an sr20de which is 2.0L in size and only held a little less than 4 qts. We only have a .3 L + in size of the engine itself, but we have 2 extra quarts of oil. Save your money, you are not benefiting at all by changing your oil that much.

Also, alot of times, the ditergents in the oil that actually clean your engine don't hit their peak functionality until you get to around 2000 miles, roughly.

Also the oil will not have the rich taste we so desire until about 2000 miles. Let it sit in there for a bit longer, really get the flavor of the engine and such. Once its drained it can be used to make a mean BBQ sauce for ribs and chicken!

What about all the talk of DISI being extra hard on oil? That combined with a turbo makes me want to stick to 3000 mile intervals.

If the manual says every 5000 miles for conventional oil, then a change every 5,000 should be more then adequate for full synthetic. I don't autocross, I don't drag race, I do on occasion drive spiritedly -- I plan on changing oil every 5K (which will be about 2X a year) with synthetic (valvoline full synthetic).

however, if changing it more often helps one sleep better, feel more comfortable, go for it...it's only money.

why do you think we have 2 extra quarts of oil in there though? Just as an example, BWM on the Twin Turbo 335xi wait until 11,000 miles or so to do the FIRST oil change and than every 7-9000 miles after that, and they start out using fully synthetic. I think 3000-5000 miles is okay, but every 1500-2000 is just a waste, unless it is being raced, than that is completely understandable.

The manual says 3K miles and doesn't differentiate between lizards and chemistry. I may stretch out to 5K when I switch to synthetic. That probably won't be 'til next spring.

My bad...must've had a Honda flashback; I still plan synthetic changes every 5K.
