Will Synthetic oil ruin my turbo?

Let it get jacked. My original question was answered long ago, and there is some good information coming out of this discussion.

qluber1, thanks for the explanation on the wax issue, that is the most educated answer I have heard on that issue yet. A lot of rumors going around about it.

In fact on that note there seem to be a lot of rumors about oil in general...

So I would like to start the rumor that using M1 will definitely get you laid...

(2thumbs)

fuel dilution does not mean break down in viscosity. people get to excited over all this "oil breakdown" drama, partly created from castrol commercials I assume...

The contamination in your oil, idealy, burns off. Not all of it, but a lot of it. This is something to keep in mind when deciding change intervals. for example, if you make a lot of short trips, short enough to where you engine/oil dont reach full operating temperature, thus affecting burnoff, your oil shoudl be changed earlier because it will be dirtier.

fuel dilution will break down the viscosity of oil ... i think it will have to be 3% or above to break it down enough to risk engine failure though.

go put some fuel on a oil stain and see what it does ....

Don't know if this is thread jacking or not...but does anyone use magnetic plugs? I just got one for my next oil change...it will be the second...

lol yea it is ...

your talking about the magnetic oil pan drain plug right?

i was thinking about try it out too, anybody tried these yet?

penzoil platinum is best IMO. mobil1 reformulated their stuff about a year ago and it hasnr been the same since.

i think the dealers ment during the break in period
cuz if u break it in with synthetic u wont get everything seated properly, its to thin

after the break in i dont think it really matters what u use, it depends on your preference i guess

edit: i have a magnetic drain plug on my vw and it worked really good when it was running lol
i just took it out and theres a good amount of stuff built up around the magnet....means its doing something

thats all BS in this day and age. all cars get to the lot with broken in engines. modern materials and components dont need several hunderd miles of "take it easy" driving and certain fluids. by the time you buy it, its broken in. i dumped my stock engine and trans oil at 1k miles. both have been fully syn ever since. i now have 27k of HARD DIVEN miles with LOTS of mods. no issues.

VI is VI (viscosity index) ie... flowability, synthetic or petroleum............synthetic is thinner?

Exactly. How do you explain the fact that cars like the Vette and Porsche's ship from factory with Mobil 1 in them?

So I got my first oil change today. I ended up going with the Royal Purple 5W-30. I haven't really had a chance to drive it much yet but it definatly feels WAY smoother at idle. I can barely tell the car is running.

That will generally happen. Cars are happy with new oil...ALWAYS...

Its funny that oil comes from organic materials, and it keep machines happy, which are made of elements that can be found in living objects...

ooooo deep...

How much do you guys pay for your synthetic oil changes. I had mobil 1 put in today and I had to drop 75 bucks.

wow ... $75?

$20-$22 bucks for 5 quart(mobile 1 and pp), spend another $4-$5 on another quart.

so $24-$27 for 6 quarts + $7 for filter and 30mins of your time

syn oil change + filter ... $35 ..

saving 40 bucks and the satisfaction accomplishment ... priceless (lol2)

You can also magnetize the oil filter housing :)

Simplest solution of all, that hardly anyone thinks of.....
But this only works for those who use spin on filters.

Damn well i got screwed. Had it changed at a mobil gas station . . . 1st and last time I do that. Where do you guys normally go ? (other than the dealer).

ahh!!!! idk im just sayin what i heard lol

i guess it doesnt matter what u put in your engine

but i do know that u can not use synthetic oil when breaking in a brand new motor ie: an engine you rebuilt
