Why buy new when upgraded will do?

yes labor is a lot...actually i think sir nuke your estimate might have even been in the low end...one dealer i know of charges $78/hour for mechanical stuff and $50/hour for cosmetic...labor is way expensive...so install it yourself if you can...and if you can't you should even try talking to some people who can...

i've installed a couple of turbos myself they are generally easy to install but the hard part is tuning them...this is not to say that just anybody can go out and install a turbo but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to install it...tuning the turbo is probably 65% of the battle...one of my friends spent like 4 weeks tweeking the turbo til he finally got it running smoothly and how he wanted it...

what's the hardest part about tuning a turbo?

for my friend it was tuning the system...once we had it installed over the period of a week (a week with very long nights)...it was a big matter of tuning the entire system...we had to get the turbo spooling at the right time, along with the right amount of boost, and had to make sure that we weren't getting any detonations...etc..etc...it was to say the least a very long and frustrating process...

$$ per horse??

Reading this thread and the debate over cost/value of a "factory" turbo upgrade made me wonder.

It looks to me like a factory Turbo upgrade is still a good value even at the Estimated $4,000 y'all have been throwing around. That's $100 a horse.

So many folks have paid a minimum of $600 for the minimal horsepower gains of a CAI plus exhaust system upgrade.

How many horses do you get by adding a new exaust and a CAI? 8 Maybe? Using Protege5online prices for a Bosal and an Injen that's about $75 a horse. It's closer to $90/horse if you use MSRP for the intake and buy a Racing Beat exhaust. Personally, $100/horse sounds pretty attractive when you toss in the warranty.

someone's math isn't very good :)

MP3 = 140hp
MAzdaspeed 3 = 170 hp

hmmm, only a 30hp difference? I would imagine that the mazdaspeed 3 has all of the mp3 "enhancements" ( i.e. ecu) to bring it to 140 without the turbo.

Personally, a turbo that only makes 30 more horsepower....ain't worth no 4000.00. They can Keep the kits. They should offer the kit to mp3 owners at cost for screwing us over on our "limited production" car....yeah right.

I'll trade the mp3 in next year, plus 4 grand, and get the mazdaspeed 6....in a different color besides ugly orange, and "pain in the ass to take care of" black. Then again, if the mazda 6 got a ford engine....I'll pass on that too. Mazda has to be really careful at this point. A lot of people, at least around here, won't by any mazda that's got any ford parts. Kinda defeats the purpose of buying a Japanese car doesn't it? I'd hate to see mazda screw up now with them getting more popular again.

On another note...have you seen the new Honda Accord yet? I think the mazda 6 has nothing to worry about at least in terms of styling.

Read the posts before you start in with sarcasm...many of the people posting on here were discussing the potential for getting the Mazdaspeed turbo as a kit for an MP 5. Most of those same people were debating the cost of a turbo that would add 40 hp to their cars...

Do try to remember that the 30 extra HP is base HP. Meaning that you will get more power once you up the boost, play with the fuel, up the exhaust piping diameter, etc. Hell even dropping in a K&N filter will yield some nice gains. So, dollar for dollar, people are probably better off turboing a car. Especially our Protege's since they don't seem to respond to well to NA modifications. Boost is the only reliable way to go for an increase in HP. Reliable as long as you know what you're doing and use a reasonable amount of boost of course.;)

Tex, relax dude. I'm just a sarcastic bastard by nature :)

And take a look at how long I've been here vs you. And I read this page EVERY day. Heck, it's my default web page. So yes, I've read the posts.

If i had the money, the kit would be a great idea. But, you take into account 4 grand, convert it to Canadian dollars..... and it's just not worth it. I'd jump at the chance for a turbo if it was under 4000 CDN. I guess the price is going to be a big question mark until if/when they release it. But I hope to god, they ain't going to ask that kind of money for it.

Think about it, in Canadian $$$, the mp3 listed for 23, 500. I paid 25000 for mine. Now the Mazdaspeed is rumoured at what ?( can't quite remember now ) Just over 27 I believe. Now that includes, turbo, LSD, seperate Kenwood amp, better speakers/subs, bigger tires, and the list goes on.

I just can't see the turbo alone costing 4000.00 american (6300.00 cdn) . They'd be insane. I'd just trade my car in for the mazdaspeed 3 if I wanted a turbo that bad and take the left over money to increase it beyond 170 hp.

You assuming of course the turbo actually adds 40 hp. Since the mp3 already has 140, and the mazdaspeed only has 170, it's qiute obvious that the turbo only adds 30 hp. Meaning for a P5 owner, your going to get 160hp. Leaving the turbo at stock specs that is. And I assure you, if you "tweak" the factory turbo, you can kiss the warranty on it good bye which defeats the purpose of a "factory" turbo anyways. Granted, for those of us not in the position to get a custom turbo, it's obviously a much easier way to get one.

It's a damn good idea, but cost is going to determine it's overall success.
