If you hit a parked car in the parking lot and the owner doesn't see, does that give you the right to just drive off?

Someone took out my fiance's rear view mirror the other day while she was shopping at Kohls. It just infuriates me that someone would a) actually do that, and b) not leave a note. I could see if you tapped someone's car and left a scuff but completely taking out their rearview mirror?

Another example, my fiance was going to school at North Eastern and parked her car in the garage. As she was walking to the stairs an Indian woman and her boyfriend come flying around the corner in a brand new Honda CRV. She darts into a spot and destroys the entire side of the late 90's Taurus that was parked in the next spot. Both doors and the rear quarter panel were scratched and dented. She backs out, straigtens the car and pulls in again. They get out and the boyfriend starts yelling at her in Hindi or whatever language they spoke, then they walk away bickering. No note, nothing. My fiance left a note for the person and slipped it in the window.

I'm not a bad driver, or parker so the situation has never come up where I'm on the opposite side of the table. Can someone explain this rude behavior. It would be nice if there were more good simaritans reporting incidents like these too.

I hate it too... I've been door dinged several times... never a note, never an appology.. etc.. I hate people that are only sorry when they get caught, or only fess up when seen.

Accountability - if people think they can get away with it, they'll do whatever they can to try and get away with it.

Some people just aren't raised with a sense of responsibility.

With my Civic, I used to get dinged quite a bit, and I'd catch a few of them doing it(I'm in and out of grocery stores all day long for work). Actually had a lady scratch her purse down the side of my car "on accident" right in front of me, and I told her off cause she acted like it was no big deal. (argh)
With the Mazdaspeed though, I seem to be unusually lucky. I always inspect my doors when getting to my car, just in case i find a ding. I haven't even seen anyone even lightly rest their door on mine while getting in their cars.

I park as far away as possible...good exercise I suppose. If I can't park far away I will take a spot on the end and park way over the line so the person next to me can't possibly hit my car. These damn SUVs don't make people better parkers either...they should start painting the lines farther apart. I would take up two spots but then people get even more inconsiderate and force their way into the half spot or worse, they key your car.

Usually the A-holes that ding other people's cars don't care about cars. They are the kind of people that would never be on a forum like this, because a car is just a means of getting form point A to B. Some of my friends laugh at me, because I park so far away at shopping malls, grocery stores, work, etc. I still park my 91 NX far away. Does anyone remember where Clark W. Griswold parked when he arrived to WallyWorld in National Lampoons Vacation? Well, that's me.

If I ever set up a car-puter I will dish out the cash for video survalence or something so I can catch the people. It would be tough to get their plates in the shots though unless I had 4 cameras.

Oh, that's NOTHING. Over in one parking garage in Georgetown a person decided to move someone elses car to get their car out. It was a manual Jetta. The person did not know how to drive a manual. The jetta looked like is was put in a compactor. It was crushed so bad in the front and rear that the windshield pillar was bent and the doors overlapped like 2 inches. The car was about 3-4 feet shorter!

I had this b**** parking attendant at one garage in Balt key my car just because I gave her a $20 instead of exact change. From the drivers door all the way to the rear fender. ******* stupid b****. I couldn't prove anything and it was a $500 car anyway...

One time my girlfriend and I were putting the shopping bags in her car in the mall parking lot. This lady drives through the lot and tries to pull into a spot, pulled in crooked as hell, so she tried to straighten it. In doing so she rubbed up against the truck next to her pretty bad, so she pulled out and took off. I got her liscense plate as she was driving off and wrote it down and put a note on the truck saying this is the plate number for the person who hit you, I saw it and will talk to police if need be, i will help you etc, also gave them my number. Well on the way out of the lot we saw the car that hit the truck, parked. I left a nice large note saying "ITS CALLED HIT AND RUN b****!"

3k of damage to the P5 while it was parked on the street... no note :(
**** that happened to me too..except it was only 1800bux. Comprehensive..hit n run. Parked on the street OUTSIDE my house. Car alarm goes off at 7am in the morning..I dismissed it..too ******* early..snowing out. Get outside in the afternoon, side mirror was folded in. I stood back further..the whole drivers side...from bumper to rear bumper, scratched up. Had to get that whole side repainted. No note, no witnesses at 7am IN THE MORNING!!! Goddam! Pissed me off. All I found was a piece of side molding w/ my blue paint all over it. Police won't do anything because the damage was not extensive enough.

You're my hero.

My roommate's car and 2 others on the bridge we park on had their passenger side mirrors knocked off with a baseball bat last night... why?!?!

Luckily the MSP was spared, but it was between two victims...

Rule # 1 of parking ... Park next to a car worth considerably more then yours .. this helps in a few ways ... hopefully they give a crap about there car ... and if someone is looking to break into a car they will like that one better ...

Rule # 2 ... dont park at Kohls ... i dont say this beacuse i dislike them .. i used to work there and ive seen more parking dings and damage then i care to imagine ... no offense but most of the people i saw dinging cars there were women in SUV's ....

Yeah people suck ass someone must have been backing out or pulling in somewhere but they hit my bumper on the msp took a lil paint off and scratched it. I have not fixed it yet. no note not sure where it happened noticed it when I was washing the car.

.. The winter before this, I had my car parked outside of my old job. The employees all parked in a seperate lot, away from where the customers park. I came out of work late one night, around 1am -- and discovered that my ENTIRE front right fender was bashed in. It genuinely looked like it had been done with a baseball bat. I just stood there and gawked. I didn't know what else to do. I couldn't even get pissed or upset -- I was too dumbstruck to do much of anything. To this day, I still have no idea how/why it happened, or who did it.

Over this past summer, when my car was parked while at work .. I've had people steal the chrome valve stem covers off my MSP wheels, someone scratched up one of my stock tail lights, someone took gouges out of the paint around my back left wheel well, and someone hit the back right half of my bumper leaving three huge scratches and a two-inch long crack.

Never a note. Never anything. Just me standing there wondering what the **** is wrong with people.
